D16Y8 built/ Turbo setup, I need advice please

Post by zrs6v4 »

It's been a few years since I've been in the car seen I used to go up to the track a lot and run for fun. I've been kind of tossed between dropping some cash on an S2000 to turbo, a KA-T 240sx, or an Mr2-Turbo. Long story short I ran across a Civic at a good price on craigslist and I plan on buying it if I can learn about the setup real quick. I need a track toy :).

Here is what he told me about the car and maybe some of you are familiar with the car. It was built in a Ranken class:

1996 Honda Civic EX D16Y8
Engine info- 2,200 miles on build
Stage 2 turbo grind crower cam: Duration: 312deg. intake: 318deg. exhaust with I/E .430/.427 lift
Supertech valve springs (single spring) with titanium retainers
machined block bored .020" or 2.972" bore diameter with main girdle alignbored to specs. (engine was hot tanked)
decked cylinder head and balanced crank
wiseco forged aluminum pistons 8.5:1 compression
Eagle H-beam rods with acl race rod and main bearings
Garrett 60-1 journal bearing turbo
SX performance fuel pressure regulator with Walbro 255lph pump, and RC 550cc injectors (pumping 1 lpm with setup)
apexi v-afc tuner with a (safe tune) running 12-14psi boost
Tial 38mm wastegate with 18lbs. springs

I realize there is more info needed (tranny, clutch etup etc...). The only weak point in the setup is the VAFC in my mind so that would be something I will play with if all goes well. Here are my concerns:

1. Besides tranny, clutch, and axel potential issues what weak points might be in this setup?

2. What kind of power do you think this car run as a street car (driven a few times a month)?

3. Any other info, opinions, or advice is appreciated.

The injectors and the VAFC are the weak links in this setup.

Someone with this type of build should have known better than to use a VAFC for tuning. Unless it's an incredible deal, I would pass on buying this. I would be too worried about the condition of the engine because of the lack of decent fuel and engine management.

I am completely new to this and I agree with the VAFC issue. Im going to try to pick it up for $3000-$3500 (He already told me he would go $3500). DO you think even at low boost it would have starved for fuel?

What is the best engine management for the money?

Thanks

I have been doing some reading. I'm hoping some turbo guys will chime in. Is there a big difference on the D-Series on whether it is sleeved or bored out? In other words is a sleeve stronger or does it really matter? I assume with a sleeve vs bore/lower compression pistons there will be an engine temp difference?

Some one can correct me if I a wrong, but sleeves are stronger. when a cylinder wall is bored out is will be thinner than stock, which I would assume would make it weaker. As far as the car goes, I would be hesitant about buying something that someone else built.

So I see a couple red flags there.

1 its a D16Y. They have issues with spinning bearings.
2 VAFC just screams bad tuning. There are somr very good affordable tuning options that are not a VAFC. One of he most popular is Hondata.
3 it looks like he did the proper work to install the pistons and rods then skimped on tuning. this says to me he ran out of money and you will most likely find more cut corners

I agree, it is always better to build yourself. Yet doing a custom block is $3500 alone :/ and there are still no guarantees other than you lnow what you put in there. I also assume you are correct on the sleeve block statement but who knows.

1. Even rlbuilt motors ( i guess they are still built with stock bearings)?
2. Vtec controller scares me to. He did it at ranken tech so im not sure what they teach :)

the bearing issue results from craink oiling. The setup is fine for stock HP, but when you start adding turbos the D16Y series tends to spin more bearings. If I remember correctly the D16Y only has only 1 oil hole and the d16z has 2.
