Could be a flipped piston ring, or if all the gaps are lined up on the piston rings it could do the same.

Yeah the oil control ring could be upside down.

is there standing oil in the cyn???

If so then i dont think its your piston

some simple things to check first

Is the Head gasket installed right as in Did the head gasket say up when you put it on.

and to answer your question on the piston check yes and no

you may not be able to see if a piston ring is flipped like waffles said.

oil control rings are the same and can go on in either way. the compression rings on most go on one way. these b7 rings are not like the b-rings.

this block was built damn near a year ago and has been sitting until now. rings can be stuck because of it. dont know.

ya, i was told the motor sat for about a year... could a ring break from sitting and then starting..? i'm almost positive its the cylinder 2nd from the dizzy (3), i'll pull the piston and see if i can tell if a ring is broke or simply not clocked...

again, thank you for the suggestions...

i pulled the #3 piston last friday, the rings looked fine aside from not being clocked, the gaps were lined up perfectly with each other so i clocked them them and re-installed it... it still smokes pretty bad but not as much as it was... I'm not sure if it's due to residual oil in the exhaust port/header or what, it sucks tho...
do i need to just let it run? maybe the oil that's left in there needs to be burned out?
