Anybody local tune OBD-0 and Turbo Edit (Plus other questions)

Post by CleanGSR »

Thanks for all the replies. I didn't know that 190whp was the "safe" limit for a stock block D. Since D16a6's are so cheap I plan to put in a stock one for daily driving and then possibly buy a second motor to build with Vitara's for higher boost......I definitely don't want to blow up the stock motor/daily driver while I'm building the vitara motor so I'll probably shoot for 180-190whp...reliability is still important on both builds.

Very good to know and thanks for your reply. You guys have a pretty awesome reputation on here so I'll probably just bring it to you for the tune.

Converting to OBD1 is not a whole lot of money. The cost of taking a trip to Nashville to tune would probably cost more. I'm pretty sure Nerrej converted his car for about $150. Plus, if you ever need a retune, that's another out of state trip. Just hop on Crome's website and check it out.

As far as power output, I wouldn't push a stock block D past 190whp if it's a DD. Ringlands start to crack and rods start to bend at 200whp. 8-10psi should easily allow you to meet your goal. I can't remember what the 14b is gated at though. Somewhere around or above 10psi. You might be able to washer out the gate to run less boost, but I'd be careful about that.

So this may be a dumb question. I remember Adrian (had a 403whp LS integra tuned himself) was talking about how boost isn't the killer, it's the amount of horsepower. He would run a higher psi with less timing and claimed it was safer that way....I think he backed that claim up by how long he ran the stock motor at something like 18psi and over 300whp. Anyway....my point is....if I got a 14b with internal wastegate set at 10psi, couldn't I have it tuned with timing backed off to produce the 190whp goal instead of over shooting it? I only know the basics about tuning and stuff so that might not make sense....but it does in my head at least..lol.

It's only dumb if you want to know and don't ask the question!

It can be done that way, but is much less efficient. The best way to do it would be to run less boost to limit power and run timing at MBT.

theres nothing wrong with turboedit, i ran a turboed d15b7 with it and it made 189whp @ 10psi with an rhb5 for over 3 years and as far as i know it still runs. if your not going to run vtec then i wouldnt even worry about converting to obd1, sure it will have more features, but for a DD "fun" car your not going to even use half of them. beside that, last i checked turboedit was open source and has had some pretty cool features added...

This depends on how restrictive the manifold / turbine housing are (before and after a new manifold). Restriction has a little bit to do with boost.
