D16Y8 built/ Turbo setup, I need advice please

Post by zrs6v4 »

Ok, I got more info today. The car was dino'ed at 195 WHP on 12PSI. He said he kept it low because the lack of capability to control timing (etc) with the VAFC. He recommended that if it was boosted higher to go with S200, s300, Apexi stand alone, or something similar. The car also has ARP head bolts, cometic headgasket, different bearings (ACL), and a few more things. He confessed he blew up the stock engine turbo'd rebuilt using ebay parts blew it again, then while at Ranken did it right in their program with the parts I mentioned. I'm tossed between doing it or not.

If it were me, I would get some clearance numbers from him.

-Piston to wall clearance
-main bearing clearances
-rod bearing clearances

Also I would get compression and leakdown numbers if you could.

If you are building a motor, I would think these numbers would be hard to forget.

It sounds like it did not make decent power at 12 psi though. And the fact that he was running 12psi with no timing control is a bad idea in itself, as some of the stock "corrections" can add a decent amount of timing on a map that was already designed to be naturally aspirated.

If you didn't want to go with hondata, there are options like ectune, crome, neptune. Hondata probably has more available tuners, and will be in business longer than the alternates (more than likely). I personally use ectune, and it works very well, datalogging works pretty seamlessly. You really can't go wrong with hondata/neptune/ectune though.

I'm probably going to pass on this thing. Thanks all for all your help, wouldn't have thought about many of these factors mentioned. I ran across an S2000 under $7,000 and may even be in the $5's. I would much rather do a ground up build on an S2000 then end up with a blown turbo civic I don't want to fix. I reasoned that Id rather have an s2000 sitting + a blown civic turbo isn't worth much these days. The Y8 block issue is probably what scared me away the most. I was initially hoping to hear this was a solid setup. Oh well.

listen to this asian ahole. He got pretty good with the little d series 6 years ago.

I would never have put more than 5 or 6 psi through a safc setup. Its a honda, there are tons of cheap standalones with tons of support on the market for next to nothing when compared to sds, wolf or megaquirt standalones
