If you modified your throttle body and/or intake manifold, as well as change to an aftermarket clutch and/or flywheel, you'd get bumped to an SP class...where I'm in now with the 'Lude. To go into SM (in your case, SM2) class, it would involve doing all the mods in SP class, plus doing lightweight mods (CF hood, gutting most of the interior, etc.), and doing things like forced-induction (turbo, SC) and internal engine mods. If all you modded to your car was the intake, that alone would move you into an ST class. Stock class rules only allow you to have a air filter (stock intake and resonator must remain the same), front strut bar, exhaust, shocks, and wheel/tires for modifications (ICE mods won't affect class designations).

Are you coming to this Sunday's event?
Unfortunately I have friends from back home in town all weekend, so I'm not able to attend. It's EXTREMELY difficult for me to watch, or even work the course. The course is fun b/c I can watch people's lines a bit better, but dammit do I hate chasing cones. I'd rather be running the car.

I'm getting a new beater next month to hold me over until I get the S2000. I'm sure I'll be ass-happy at first running the s2k. hehe The beater I wouldn't mind running, just to see how horribly it handles. lol

If you show up to more events, you can opt into other work assignments that isn't chasing cones, like the timing trailer (which has an a/c), front gate, corner captain (make the novices do the cone chasing for you), etc. Working an assignment isn't fun, but to have an event run, you need everyone that competes to work a heat as well. With 6 runs/event (double what we used to get in the past), there's more incentive to do it. I do course setups in the morning, which requires me to be there at 6am. It's damn early, but I get my assignment out of the way. At this Sunday's event, I'm also the course designer and acting chief, so I'm gonna be busier than normal...and hope people like my course.

The beater will be a good learning car for you. In a car like that, you're forced to be efficient in your driving, and getting the most out of that car. The s2000 is a fun car to autocross...I've enjoyed flogging, er, codriving one from time to time. Yes, it is ass-happy, but know how to control it, and it is damn quick to drive!

The upgraded brakes won't necessarily bump you to SP class. Did you swap the motor for the same kind of motor? If it is a different motor (ex: B16 swapped for a B18), then you get bumped to SM instead, which is worse.

car is a 89 civic std and came stock with a 1.5 dpfi motor and now has a obd0 b16a in it with I/H/E integra da brakes, upgraded clutch, strut bars, coil overs and tokiko HP's, short throw shifter, chipped ecu, VAFC, high flow cat, recaros, front lip, 16" rims .. i think thats the main list of stuff

so i am sure that eliminates me from alot of the classes

If it wasn't for the engine swap, you would've been in an SP class...can't remember which SP class, though now that's moot. Your car is SM written all over it. I think there's a 90 Civic Si hb that's in SM locally. It seems pretty quick. If you make it out and compete in that class, go get some r-compounds down the line. It's a pretty wide-open class, and it's nicknamed the "money pit" class because almost anything goes modwise.

^^^I think I've seen you compete before. You haven't competed as much the last couple of years though, right? Get that beater and start competing again...since not this weekend, the next event.

This is my 7th year autocrossing as well. Been 2nd place in STX and DSP 4 of the years, winning the class last year. Went to Nationals twice...once in the Prelude, the second time in a Miata in CS. Yeah, event trophies don't matter to me much....it's the season trophy at the end of the year that makes it all worthwhile.

but...but...the beater will be an AUTO SEDAN! 2 things i'm 293473957541% against. :( and it's heavy as hell.

i'll prolly eat every cone out there. i've never owned an auto in my life, nor a sedan. i honestly can't drive an auto. they coast, causing me to stop too suddenly and/or too late, and i hit the gas too hard causing me to look like i'm racing. i'm used to rev matching and going through my gears to slow down.

watch me try to heal-toe w/ the mazda while grabbing for a non-existant clutch! LOL!!

Hey, I've autox'ed some POS's in my day. The last one I drove was a Nissan Sentra SE that was an auto, all season tires, and not much else (Enterprise Rent-A-Car special!). In a way, it was fun to run the crap outta that car, and had faster times than people with much faster/better prepped cars.

Kelly, heel-toe doesn't really help you that much on an autocross course anyways. Well, unless it's a more wide-open course. However, you can work on left-foot braking/threshold braking...and an auto is as good a car as any to practice on that technique. Or, get that s2000 now!
