The pimp ride...

Post by BABY J »

1st generation Civic Hatch. Purchased new buy some lucky guy 6/29/77 and has never been titled outside of GA. This is vehicle number 9 for me (this shit's gotta stop) - LOL. I am the 3rd owner. Zero rust. 149,000 miles (i'm sure that the ODO has rolled over though since it only goes to 99,999) - 4spd STD. Manual choke - got her up to 82mph when I 1st got it, and that only took 6 or 7 miles to do (LMFAO). No tach so I backed off b4 VTEC kicked in:hsdance:. She had new(er) tires (crap), brakes (still suck), carb (yummy) and engine overhaul. Who's ya daddy? It has original radio - everything works except for the rear-view mirrow, which is still laying on the back seat. Factory "scoop" and racing stripes - true 70s muscle.

Oh yeah - fresh paint:rofl:

Had my buddy QD to follow me to drop the beast off @ Pro Import Services and he snapped some pics. to discuss w/ Adam Malley (http://mallenalley.com/home.html) (6 time SCCA national champ in the same EB chassis) on the direction to take this guy. This is how it looked after I cleaned it up.

(remember, when I found it it had NO wheels, no brakes, and was sitting in mud up to the bottom of the doors. I had to wait for the ground to dry out in order to dig it up)

ACQUIRED 2 weeks after getting it tagged and insured. Auxillary fuel and engine temp gaugues, as well as a tach. This setup adds the tach (previously non-existant) to the main dash, left of the speedo. Currently, the left gauge in my car is an integrated engine temp/fuel level gauge.

Fairly rare, and hard to get in working condition.

Image

This is what it will look like installed: (my interior is MUCH nicer then this photo already though).

Image

Hmmm... wonder what this is... more rareness? All i need is matching shift-knob (on the way from New Zealand) to complete all the OEM goodness for the interior. The rest will be aftermarket:

Image

Image

Okay - I stopped by my buddies shop (Superstar Customs). It was a slow day, so I decided to whip out my orbital and "finish" the oxidation removal. :) I grabbed some trusty Turtle Wax Premium Rubbing compound and went to work:

Image

and

Image

That was just the initial job. I then hand-washed the car, and then headed back up there and re-did the entire car again w/ more discretion.

After one more once-over w/ rubbing compound, I washed, then polished the car. Then a day later I finished up w/ a wax. All that just to have it sanded off for flat black paint from ASLA. I ordered all new rubber from Scotts Old Rubber.

Now - on to some other news. :)

While I was doing that, Bucky decided to take off my wheels and spray them w/ Alsa (http://www.alsacorp.com) gunmetal wheel paint. Here is a quick before/after:

Image

That is my spare tire (left unpainted) next to one of the "new" ones. After the paint, I stopped by a local tire shop to have them balanced and have the weights put on the inside of the wheels this time.

He also decided to polish the Honda center cap to a high gloss as well:

Here are a few more pics:

All in all I am happy w/ the wheels. They started out like this:
Image

They are 70s Shelby Cobra wheels in 4x120. Purists are upset that I modified such a rare wheel --- and those purists can bite my ass w/ your tongue out --- I don't try to keep up w/ the Joneses, I build what I want to build - at my pace and how I see it in my mind. This is when I dropped them off for trueing, powdercoating at Wheel Wizard:

Image

Hmmmm --- wonder what these are? Oh -- I know... looks like some 185/60-13 Sumitomo HTR 200.

Image

Image

And what's this? Looks like the guys at Wheel Wizard took this:

Image

and then turned them into:

The pics look glossy b/c of the flash - but they are actually flat-black powder coat.

As far as tires, I am gonna run 175s instead of 185s in front once I burn them up. This way it will tuck better when I toss on my modified EF suspension. Also, I measured the inside of the cone (area where center cap connects) and I am gonna have Wheel Wizard cut that down, and weld a simple dome-topped cap - (I had to mount the wheels to see how much area to cut b/c of the hub) there as I am not a fan of the center cap. I also found the 1 company on the planet that makes Mag-Style (sheath) lugs in a 1.25 and in BLACK!!!! So they are on order as well. Then I will have the wheels re-powder-coated after the custom cap is welded on and smoothed. This time, I will also have the spokes smoothed a bit b4 the powder-coat.

Here are a few snapshots of my 1st gen during Import Alliance 2008 (www.importalliance.org). We made the hop from ATL to Nashville for the show and it was a great time. I hope to see more 1st gens next year - and rest assured, mine will be dialed in and DONE by then... she's goin' down for the winter, and when it comes back - be ready * smiling *

This is the 1st checkpoint in Chattanooga, TN (wal-mart). We ran into a little rain, but it was still a good drive to Nashville.

Image

Drive back through North Georgia - JDM Dc2 on the left (less RHD conversion) and N/A 6th gen Accord on the right.

Image

Just before making the dash to the top on the mountain (MOnteagle, TN). My baby climbed the mountain w/out breaking a sweat.

Image

This was actually the final day of the show (Sunday), as we were leaving the Nashville Superspeedway (Lebanon, TN)

Image

The ride back home... we were just north of ATL at this time.

Image

Sunday evening - Waffle House stop

Image

The way there - side-view mirror shot.

Image

Ugly mudflap shot - currently removed the flaps - I do not like them anymore (altho at one point I wanted 2 new ones).

Image

Day 2 at the show.

Image

Day 1 at the show. As I cruised through the gates Mr. Napier (founder of IA) pulls up on a golf cart, breaks up our caravan and says "I GOTTA have you in the booth in front of the IA information table. I was stoked!!! Even in rat-rod form, the 1G was the star of the show even as it sat beside a carbon-fiber R34 Skyline. Craziness!!

Image

Another Day 1 (booth) shot.

Image

Day 2 - a little effects. LOL. The cartoon 1st gen - LOL

Image

Another shot just before the climb up Monteagle, TN

Image

Dashing up the 7% grade w/ half of the caravan in tow --- GIT SOME!!!

Image

Asleep at the wheel. This thing drives itself!! The Herbie of Hondas. LOL

Image

Cruise shot

Image

3 more day 1 shots.

Ok --- that's just to get the "retro" pics in. I will upload the fresh pics from the draw-thru carb setup (Weber Carb. Elec fuel pump, and Rayjay turbo... LOL. Stay tuned. I used the elec fuel pumps draw as a boost reference so we don't lean out under boost...

TEASER:

* 0 miles EB2 1200cc engine (New Old Stock - never been run)

* 1300cc crank, and 1300 shot-peened rods

* RayJay turbine

* Weber Carb

You got me - maybe there was less than a dime-size spot on the drivers door. When I drove my Datsun 510 home there was nothing lieft - LOL.. my '80 Mazda GLC had so many holes that it whistled when I drove down the road... so in my world (old skool), this was a "rust-free" specimen in comparison. :)
