Turbo Help

Post by MaSSaCrE »

so I have had this turbo for a little bit now and have absolutely no idea what it is and really havnt done any measurements to it yet because i dont have a mic. The turbo is a garrett turbo for sure, has the optional external or internal wastegate setup, has the adapter piece that makes it like that along with going from a 5 bolt exhaust housing down to a 3 bolt exhaust housing. Its oil and water acceptable.11 exhaust fins, 12 compressor fins depending whats considered a fin or not.

Only thing on the turbo is .48 stamped on the exhaust housing and the cold side has been changed out it appears for a Polished Turbonetics Housing. Everything is garrett and air research stamped sides the cold side housing

Anyone got any good guesses, any help would be appreciated until I can measure and spec everything out

.48 stamped on the exhaust housing is an indication of the A/R which is a sizing reference marking for the housing itself. Also tells me it is a T3 flanged unit.

The CHRA (center section) being oil and water cooled likely means it is a ball bearing unit.

As far as the count of the blades... that really does not help distinctively identify it. Also sounds like you counted the half height blades on the compressor side in addition to the full length blades, which generally most reference to a blade count on a wheel will only refer to full length on compressor wheels and total number on turbine wheel.

Take some more pictures, look for a serial # tag, etc. Also even if you dont have a mic you can still measure the approximate size of the compressor wheel inducer (leading edge) and exducer (trailing edge).

No there isnt a stamp like pictured which is the big reason why I had came for some help. The only number at all on the turbo is a pat number on the inner section, did alot of looking up on it and no info found at all .

I was told it was a t3/t4 t28 or gt28, dont remember what previous owner had told me. It came in a garrett box that had the numbers for it but when looking it up the numbers were for alot bigger turbo. .60 cold side .98 hot side. so I dont believe it was the proper box for it

Only way to know for sure is to measure the wheels with the housings off of it. The hardest part of that is getting the bolts loose on the turbine housing, they tend to be less than cooperative with a little age.

Closest measurements I could get using a ruler and straight edge and me believing i got the inducer\exducer thing down.

Garrett Turbo(Oil and Water cooled) with a turbonetics intake housing with 3" inlet

Intake Side:
Inducer 59mm
Exducer 73mm
6 Blades
Unknown A\R

Exhaust Side:
57mm inducer
51mm Exducer
11 Blades
.48 A\R

If you pull the comprssor housing, please please make sure to place the housing back on perfrctly flat.......even if its a little uneven can knick the blades. Garrett sometimes puts small id plates on the rear of there compressor housing sections also. Like chad said id assume it was a small frame ball bearing t3, but water and oil cooled are common on journal bearing setups also. If you are brave enough, almost all compresser wheels have a small number on the back of the wheel that could help narrow your search.
back in a nissan bitches...........

I laid the turbo into the housing on a flat surface and hand tightened each bolt\plate down evenly then used wrench rest of way. Kinda figured it woulda been a good idea. I did turn the housing clockwise so its angled better for my setup, hopefully thats fine lol.
