Just wondering something...

Post by rickles8099 »

to me what got me into hondas revolved more around a friendship than the car/cars i was working on.

stolle and i knew each other and really started hanging out more when he had his crx and i had my old 91 hatch... later to be scrapped for my 88 crx. we went to college together and talked about our cars there and would work on and play with our cars on an almost daily basis. junkyard visits were several times a week during the summer. i think that the first overnight haul and build of a hybrid transmission was the defining point of when the heavy modding began and things just kept on going.

as far as loud exhaust goes, small displacement engines can have a nice low sound to them if the exhaust is done correctly. my crx had a full three inch exhaust. most poeple said it was quiet and thought it had a v6 or small v8 swap done.

not being a jerk at all as it's a perfectly reasonable question. I originally joined looking for tech advice from when me and my dad were fixing a wrecked accord we bought and flipped. we needed help with the suspension parts and I've known of this board for awhile, so I joined to ask questions and get advice on the correct way to fix the car. once that was done and the car was sold, I decided to hang around and just keep an eye on builds that people posted from time to time that interested me.

Like I said, while I can't fully understand why people do mod Hondas (or anything that's not really considered a sport or muscle car) I do get the sense of pride that people take when they build something they like. And now I'm just looking to understand that more by seeing the reasons people have is all.

I'll go ahead and say what prompted this question to pop up in my head though. Last weekend I was out running some errands and as I was walking into the store, there was two really riced-out civics in the lot, with the owners standing around talking about them. One had IL tags on it and a FS sign in the window, but was lime green with a horrible body kit and a dual exhaust on it. The other was white and a little more subtle with it's mods, except the exhaust, which was really big. They were talking about why they did what they did to the cars, and the owner of the green one said: "cause i liked the looks of the eclipse in the fast and furious, but i wanted my own spin on it and came up with this. it looks good and it's really fast". I had to chuckle as I heard him say that but I can't speak to knowing if it was fast or not. The kid with the white ones reason was: "i've heard that the bigger the exhaust, the more horsepower you gain, so I got the biggest one I could for it and put it on".

I just figured and was hoping that there was more to it for most people than that, as I really take the time to think about what I'm gonna do to my cars and if I'm gonna like it after it's done. Sorry for the long, drawn out post, I just wanted to explain a little more.

Sounds like two guys who have never touched a wrench before in their lives. Shoulda told the the guy in the white car that stickers are good for about 5 hp each. The vinyl makes your car more aerodynamic so like wind doesn't drag on the paint as much or something stupid like that.

1) The only mods I have ever really done to a car is suspension and exhaust. Which my last car, Integra had a really subtle exhaust and loved it. And had a coilover sleeve setup on it. I like Honda's. I like the way they look, mainly pre 2001, cause almost everything sucks ass looks wise that is 2001 or newer. I will never have a really fast Honda, unless I buy one already built. I usually don't have them long enough to really mod them anyways. They are cheap and fun to drive which is really only what matters to me. Cause I am not made of money. I don't need to go fast to enjoy driving. I have no desire to go do the quarter mile. You can make them look good for not a lot of money. Cheap to maintain, good on gas, parts are cheap, etc etc. I have respect for any car and or build out there. As long as you like it, that is ok with me.

2) I like and dislike loud exhausts. If it sounds really good and its loud, rock the hell out of it. If its a riced out, big ass fart can and sounds like ass. Just wreck it already. Both of my cars are stock exhaust, the civic will get some kind of exhaust, but will be a more quiet subtle one.

feel free to respond Pat. I guess it's more an "in general" type of question regarding cars even though I did phrase it for just Hondas

i still like Hondas but dont really build them any more. I personally like older boxy cars, and the handling and looks of the CRX caught my eye. The only 2 Hondas I have modded have both been CRXs.

I like alot of old jap cars in general, but my interest have moved from speed to a fun cruiser, and moved on to old RX7s. I dont really like any cars newer than 1990 for my project cars. Old Z cars, RX7, RX3, Datsun roadster, etc

2) i dont drive the car that often and i kinda like how deep the sound is my car idles like a v8 but has a redline of 9k. Yeah it's loud but that's cause race car

Cleaned.

Please remember this thread is not about the things that have been said to you because you love hondas, but what motivates you.
