One of my biggest pet peeves is the use of the ÷ symbol. Not wrong but I just prefer the / symbolizing the fraction that it is.
Like I said earlier if the (9+3) is in the denominator then it's 2. But if it's not then it's 288. The notation of the equation is bad. 288 isn't wrong but neither is 2. I'm still saying it's 2 cause I read it as a fraction cause of the / if it was a division symbol then id say 288
gudg racing you're never gonna catch me!!

I would want to say your wrong. Like said im sure the answer could swing both ways but regardless how you look at it parenthesis come first. Maybe im wong though, I learned math wrong all my life I suppose.

Not quite sure how this is even an arguable problem if order of operations is used

exactly order of operations. Division ALWAYS comes before multiplication.

BODMAS is Brackets-Orders-Division-Multiplication-Addition-Subtraction

(9+3)48/2 = (12)48/2 = (12)24 = 288

If the answer was 2 the equation would look like this.
48/(2(9 + 3))

But, BODMAS does not take into account rationalization of equations.

"A common technique for remembering the order of operations is the abbreviation "PEMDAS", which is turned into the phrase "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally". It stands for "Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, and Addition and Subtraction". This tells you the ranks of the operations: Parentheses outrank exponents, which outrank multiplication and division (but multiplication and division are at the same rank), and these two outrank addition and subtraction (which are together on the bottom rank). When you have a bunch of operations of the same rank, you just operate from left to right. For instance, 15 ÷ 3 × 4 is not 15 ÷ 12, but is rather 5 × 4, because, going from left to right, you get to the division first. If you're not sure of this, test it in your calculator, which has been programmed with the Order of Operations hierarchy. For instance, typesetting this into a graphing calculator, you will get: 20"

division/multiplication are on the same level....as is addition/subtraction

Lol, saw that one on the physics site where I am pulling most of my stuff from. I just like playing devils advocate and steph is being a good sport about it :)

The post that you just did 5thgen is very correct, it was how I was always taught. Multi\division is on same level along with addition\subtraction.

The way I was taught though was that parenthesis are FIRST. Regardless if you had already added what is in the parenthesis together. I was taught you proceed with the problem by cancelling out the parenthesis first as well if its a problem like the one were discussing. So therefor you would have to multiply into the parenthesis first. You wouldn't necessarily have to have the other opening parenthesis before the ..........2(9+3)

Which if you had already added them together is 48/2(12)

2(12) comes first in the way I was taught, but every teacher has there own ways in teaching I suppose.

So I still dont say im correct or that I am wrong.
