48/2(9+3)=?

Post by Waffles »

For example, we start with the problem but add a variable in the parenthesis

48/2(9X+3X) = Y
I would first distribute the 2: 48/(18X+6X) = Y
Sum the content of the parenthesis: 48/24X = Y
Then set X = 1
48/24=Y
Y=2

You don't know what you're talking about. You're not very smart, and the things you're saying are nonsense. And I'm not angry. But you do need to shut up.

The way it's written the 9+3 is in the denominator. So the answer is 2. If it was written as (48/2)(9+3) then the answer would be 288. But thats not how it's written.

Division comes before multiplication, equation should go from left to right.

From what I remember about order of operations, it ends up being 288.

I thought that you started with adding 9 and 3 because they are in parenthesis (no distributive property because there are no variables?) and THEN doing the multiplication and then the division...

Keep in mind math has never been my strong suit but that was the way order of operations was taught to me.

And not that this makes me right, but if you plug the equation into this particular calulator:

It comes out to 288. Regardless of what it actually is, I'm just surprised I showed this much interest in math...

You hit one of the major arguments of this equasion. The way it's formatted. There is no question it is 288 the way you formatted it. But with the formatting as is people are arguing the rules. Even TI treats it differently between different versions of the calculator.

One of my biggest pet peeves is the use of the ÷ symbol. Not wrong but I just prefer the / symbolizing the fraction that it is.
