Getting the hang of this Lean Burn thing...

Post by RyanA »

Well, I got the Insight back on Wednesday night and I've been getting the hang of getting the car into Lean Burn as soon as possible and keeping it there. Here is my "progress" I've made. None of these are on roads that are nearly flat. I can't wait to take an actual road trip as I am pretty sure I'll be able to squeeze 70-80 mpg out of this thing just from getting the driving technique down.

Starting out. Didn't pay attention to lean burn (and it never engaged since I was not running the gas pedal correctly)

After 80 miles of driving, I figured out that these cars don't go into lean burn themselves; you have to let them know they can do it. So from about 86 miles to what the trip odometer reads now, I got the car to go into lean burn. On light hills, I was maintaining 75-85 mpg. On flats, I was getting 100-115 mpg. On downhills, it obviously was getting 150+ mpg...

Friend called yesterday to see if I could pick up a starter for his boat and bring it to him. Pretty hilly roads and lots of people driving 15-20 under the speed limit. This was keeping me from staying in lean burn the whole time but I did as well as I could...

True test will be in 2 weeks I'll take the car to Nebraska. Once I get to Sedalia, roads are pretty smooth and flat. I'm really hoping to get well over 75 mpg on the trip. We'll see.

Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car and oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car.
Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall, torque is how far you take the wall with you.
Hope this helps

Yes I own 2 slow red chick cars & 1 real car!

I have a complete extra engine/trans/IMA motor/harness and all 3 ECU's with low miles so if it goes, I have backups...
