My dad manages housing developments in several of the areas that would be flagged.... 1 of which I go to twice a week, and another I will be doing landscaping work at for the next two weeks. A few years ago city police set up a surveillance in one of the vacant units and arrested 20 people for buying/selling drugs on the corner of the block.

They have made a lot of headway with most of their neighborhoods, and their lease agreements have a zero tolerance policy for any activity that could be remotely gang/drug related (IE, if your nephew is staying with you and his gang friends come hang out --> you could get evicted); but they can't control the buildings they don't manage, and they can't control the next block over.
Most of the time during the day its pretty quiet... then you start seeing a lot of people showing up wearing the same kind of colors and you start thinking about finishing up the project you are working on and calling it a day.

What areas are those? When I lived in Bellefountaine it was pretty bad. Havent been down there in a long time. But that area and the surrounding areas were not great to be out at night.
