computer help

Post by 99PreludeSh »

Well my parents are going to restore their computer.

This is the problem:

I need to get all the pictures and some programs and files onto the zip disk but it wont let me drag or even copy and paste anything to it. I have no idea whats wrong.

Any help would be great. Thanks

Hmmm... What applications are you running? What version of windows?

Does the computer start up just fine? and do you have the original reboot disc? This was just for preperation if things are really getting bad on the computer.

You mentioned that you can't drag or "right click" and then "copy" or "paste"...

Can you highlight the items you want to select at least?

Its Windows Xp

Computer starts up jut fine I can get on both accounts. I'm not 100% sure about the reboot disc.

No it wont let me drag or drop but I can highlight and open.

Also at the bottom there is no toolbar on one account but there is on the main account but none of the programs that are open and up show up on it.

Try this... highlight the selected and then hit "CTRL" and "C" to COPY at the same time and see if that can help you... if it does, then "CTRL" and "P" to PASTE

To make less mess when you buy alot of computers tword the last couple years of running xp and moving to vista had no reboot disc, they just stored the info on the harddrive as the recovery drive.

I'd boot the computer in safe mode and try that route, if not then safe mode with command prompt and sort through folders that way and since you'd be using basic command line functions there would be no need for right click or ctrl + p or any of that matter cause you simply would type the folder and name and whatnot and copy it to the zip drive. If you don't know how to do this I'd recommend looking up the folder functions for dos before proceeding, cause once in there you can add/delete/modify basic folder functions.

I see no reason you wouldn't be able to copy pics out, but if trying to get apps out, that's another story

To get the images out, try opening the folder first, selecting the images (a dozen or so at a time as a test) and copying them to the zip

If that doesn't work, there's something amiss

I'm a little suspicious of zip drives working with XP as zip driver may not work with XP since zip disks are kinda' dated technology

Speaking of, can you get images out onto a flash drive? If so, that isolates the zip disk as a source of the issue
