Kpro issues - uploading calibrations and no spark :-(

Post by 97tegra »

Posting this for a buddy, we have been busting our asses trying to get this car done for IA and it's not looking so good now... :angryfire: Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. K20a.org has been down for 24 hours due to maintenance but it is back up so maybe there is still hope.......... :-/

First post from K20a.org
Story:

Bought a PRB Kpro ECU and type-s trans off user K20yimmy back in November. I was told it was "new in box." The item DOES look to be in great shape, and it came with the USB cable wrapped up in plastic, and the hondata disc in its little case, but when calling Hondata about my issue they told me the unit is about 2 years old. The user I bought it from has not been on k20 since February, but I do have his number and have tried contacting him (no reply yet).

I have been working on this car for 7 months, and like many, I have been hard at it these past couple weeks trying to get it done for IA.

I went to fire it up for the first time this morning. I have got fuel, power, the car is wanting to turn over, and I can't find any signs of there being any electrical issues...

My problem is, when I go to upload the calibration from the laptop to the ECU it fails.

What I have done:

Re-installed kmanager software 5 times (same laptop). Each time I have uninstalled I have deleted it via add/remove programs, made sure there is no more kpro items left in program files, and deleted any and all (including hidden) drivers on the computer. I always download the software straight from hondata.com, and I know it is the latest version (V1-5-1)

I have tried disabling all firewall/computer protection on the computer.

I have tried doing the "Erase ECU (clear security)" several times now, and did it as instructed - ignition on, ECU, and laptop all connected, and then after it was completed, waited a couple minutes before turning the ignition back on.

I have double checked to make sure my USB drivers always updated once inside Kmanager.

The USB connection seems to be good. Everytime I re-install the software and hook up the ECU to the laptop, the computer recognized the ECU and automatically installs the drivers. Also, the light on the ECU comes on whenever it it connected, and when hooking the ECU up to the HR conv. harness/K-series engine harness (chase bays) and turn on the ignition, it recognizes when the ignition is on, and alerts me in the kmanager window.

I have tried uploading a couple different calibrations. 3 that come on the manager, and 1 that I downloaded.

Series of connections are as follows.

Hook ECU to laptop, prepare calibration in Kmanager, hook harness(s) into ECU while ECU is connected to computer, turn ignition on, check to make sure kmanager recognizes the connection, then attempt to go to Online>Upload. It always does the same thing, takes 2-3 seconds, puts up the little upload bar real quick, then gives me the upload error.

Does anyone have any other suggestion on things to try? I called Hondata tech and the guy told me to just send in detailed pictures of the unit. I might add he sounded like a real dick and wasn't a pleasure at all to talk with.

I am going to pick up another laptop this afternoon and try to do it from a different machine, but I am without hope after that.

Am I completely screwed if the ECU/kpro is bad and I don't have any documentation from when it was done? I would rather not be out another $1000 for another Kpro.

Thanks.

Second Post

Okay so I felt pretty awful all day since I pulled an all-nighter trying to get it running last night. I ended up feeling a little better and tried to go over things for about 3 hours.

I found a couple of little things I missed, but still no luck with the ECU.

I got the fuel pressure set where it needs to be (~52psi).

I took off all the grounds in the engine bay and scuffed the surface underneath down to the metal with a dremel since the bay had been painted/cleared.

The car cranks strong and I have fuel, but I don't think it is getting any spark.

I tried downloading the kmanager software on another computer and still no luck uploading the calibrations. The ECU recognizes when the ignition is turned on, and it allows me to enable datalogging, but it still wont load anything.

I tried what you said and disconnected power before plugging up the ECU but still nothing, and yes, I have been disabling multiplexor and immobilizer.

I was trying to use an OBDII reader by plugging it in via the Hybrid Racing conversion harness port, but it tells me that there is an error and can't read anything.

So my questions I have now are...

Is it possible that the Kpro's inability to upload these calibrations is directly related to the problem of not getting spark?

Does it make sense that there is something wrong with the Kpro (i.e. need to send it to Hondata or get a new one) when it is making a good connection with the laptop and recognizes ignition, yet fails when trying to upload calibrations?

- A tuner I talked to seemed to think it is much more unlikely the ECU has an issue if it is getting power and recognizing vehicle functions...

Why would the OBDII reader not be able to read anything? The CEL indicator is lit up on the dash.

First try plugging in the KPro and keying on before opening KManager. Sometimes this will correct the issues.
If that doesn't seem to fix it, go to here and run the program. This will disable any usb devices that have been used on your system so you will have to reinstall all drivers. There is a problem with some FTDI drivers that will not overwrite even though it says the drivers have been installed.
Give this a try and let us know the results.
