B series auto tranny question

Post by getteg »

So I am helping a friend swap out his blown engine in a month or so and his teg has an automatic tranny. Is there anything special I need to know or have in order transfer this to the new engine like tools or parts that would have to be replaced?

I have swapped out a manual tans before so I know how it all goes just wanted to make sure there is nothing special about the auto trans.

Thanks in advance

Nothing really too special. When separating the engine and transmission, remove the inspection cover and unbolt the 10mm bolts that hold the torque converter and the driveplate together. This will make changing the transmission over to the new motor a brezze and help with cleanup. Make sure to keep the torque converter in the transmission so you don't lose any transmission fluid. You'll have to transfer the driveplate to the new motor as well. It's held onto the crankshaft by 12-point 17mm bolts. Make sure to reuse those bolts since they're a different length then the bolts that hold a flywheel to the crankshaft. When unbolting the shift cable, the 10mm bolt will have two metal tabs pushed up against the sides of the bolt that will have to be pried back. That's there so that the bolt won't back itself out. Other then that, just expect heavy lifting since the automatic transmission weighs almost twice as much as a manual.

also, to add to what Rob said.... aren't the torque converter bolts (those 10mm he was talking about) reverse threaded??? watch out for that, if you break em off, you kinda screw yourself.

Someone needs to verify this tho, I don't deal with automatics much

They shouldn't be unless the B series torque converters are different. I've done 5 D series and 1 H series automatic transmission swaps and none of them had reverse thread 10mm bolts. They shouldn't be on there super tight either. It should have less then 25 lbs.-ft. torque.

ok, i could have sworn you were the one who told me they were reverse threaded.
It made sense since I remember breaking every one of them when I manual swapped my accord.
