Weird Engine/Trans Noise

Post by bemberg2 »

There has been this gradually worsening noise that happens when my car idles.
When I press the clutch in, the noise goes away. I think my clutch is going out/ something in the transmission is giving way. No performance/gas mileage issues, just annoying. Any clues?

I'd just buy a clutch kit and resurface the flywheel (If possible. If not, replace it too). Install both and that should take care of your issue.

This is a noob question. But roughly how long/ what tools do you need to replace a clutch/flywheel? Does anyone on here want to help/get paid to do it or know a good place to take it? Thanks

you will need a 17mm socket for the bolts in the tranny and a 19mm for the two bolts that go through the t bracket into the tranny(they are 19's on my car anyway), then remove the long bolt out of the starter(14mm i believe) or you can just take the starter completely off if you want to, remove the slave cylinder off of the front of the tranny(be careful not to mess up the line) take off the tranny, take the bolts out of the pressure plate, cant remember what size the bolts are, remove clutch and pressure plate then take the 6 bolts out of the flywheel and take it off. then install new pressure plate, clutch, flywheel and TOB. make sure it is lined up correctly. some clutch kits come with an alignment tool. then put it all back together
i may not be "logical" but at least i can change my oil...

Thanks for the advice. Do clutch kits come with the pressure plate, clutch, flywheel and TOB?

probably wont come with the flywheel but should be PP, clutch and throw out bearing. you can just get the flywheel resurfaced rather than buying a new one.

You'll need a 12-point 10mm socket to remove the pressure plate and a 12-point 17mm socket to remove the flywheel.

This should be everything you need to know to change a clutch and throwout bearing...
