Drivability issue

Post by ejtuner88 »

After my '93 civic broke down after a long trip, I did some testing and found out that the ICM had failed. I replaced it and after i did it wouldn't fire. Turned the distributor 180 and played around with it and finally got it running, but when i step on it it sounds like 1 or 2 of the cylinders die completely until i let of off it. It also idles real rough. any ideas?

okay first off you cannot turn the distributor 180 degrees... it only goes on one way. and even if you could doing so would not get it to fire again. if by getting fire you mean you actually checked to see a spark plug would spark when grounding it out and cranking engine over.

9 times out of 10 its the iginition coil. but since you got it running then thats not it. youre problem right now is you somehow managed to force the distributor on 180 degrees off LOL...did you even set the ignition timing?

no i didn't. but i turned the distributor shaft 180, not the whole distributor. and at first it didnt fire up but when i cranked it it sounded a lot closer to bein in time than it did before. some adjusting and a couple gallons of gas later we got it to fire and run decent, but it still sounds like it's a few degrees retarded. i do have an msd setup with an sci box, but when i was performing the original diagnosis, i bypassed it and it didn't make a difference so it should be good still.

yea ok. but is there anything else that could cause this problem? ive tested all the sensors i can think of and the basics like the fuel filter and injectors. i doubt that it could be bad gas because i have filled it up a couple times since the issue started.

lol.

I'd say that he doesn't have the timing set even close, mike. or he tried setting it w/o the service jumper shorted.

actually it was the distributor itself. it was one of my suspects but i didnt wanna go throw a $180 distributor on it just to find that wasnt the issue either. thats the only reason i even posted it on here was to get a second opinion. it runs like a champ now.
