What to do...

Post by Dan The Man »

Hey guys, some of you may know I let go of my 99 prelude after I had a little run in with a mailbox, and I picked up a 96 Civic EX. The first few weeks were fun learning how to drive a stick, however, after driving a buddy's GSR sunday, I have to say I can't take it anymore. I need to start building this car, however until I pay off the 2000 dollars that I owe my parents for the civic, I can't buy anything. SO, right now I can only start planning.

Basically, I'm considering a few things...

N/A B16 swap
N/A B18C1 swap
Turbo build on the y8.
H22 swap (bring back the glory days :D)

I've looked into pricing, and I'm just not sure what i want to do, the b16 is so appealing because (IIRC) it uses the same mounts, but I feel like its what everyone else does.

Sorry, I'm ranting, Any suggestions would be appreciated! If there's anything else that I haven't thought of, help me out here! Thanks!

a few people on here could knock out a gsr swap in a day. It is well worth it and isnt too difficult.

same mounts as your d-series? ..........no.

b18c and b16 swap will take the same amount of time and the same accessories (mounts, linkage, etc etc)... don't waste your time on the b16.

I can pull one in my garage in the morning and have it driving that afternoon. B swaps are pretty easy. You can use all of your mounts EXCEPT the driver side cast iron piece that bolts to the block by the timing belt and the rear "T" bracket. Both can be had for less than $100 shipped, brand new from Majestic Honda.

Yes, the GSR is pretty nice. However, a B16 is not all that bad. Honestly, if I wanted to budget build it, I'd do the B16 trans and either an LS or GSR engine.

BTW: Prelude is coming along. I got the front suspension together and had the car aligned today. The trans is pretty funky on the 1-2 shift unless you put it in sport shift mode. Not sure how long it will really go... Right now, just waiting on the fender and fender liner and it will be back together. Airbags are already replaced, too.

If you need anything, let me know. I may just have it.

Thanks for all the advice, I'm probably going to start looking more into a b18, though I've read some information about a b20 block mated to a b16 head? It seems to produce some good numbers, but it may be too big of a bite for me to chew.
