planning to supercharge my d

Post by jdmjerry07 »

I will be taken my motor out in a couple of months gettin it on a engine stand and begining to rebuild and build the motor up for a jc supercharger kit. My hp goal is 230-250 whp. Never delt with building or rebuiling motors before, alls I know is that I wanna do it right and make it run good. Your suggestions on first steps were to take it and things to buy lots of comments plz I need to be educated! Mainly just want advice for pistons brands and and the rebuild of the motor places to use.

yeah, that's gonna be a little tough to reach that power goal with JRSC. Here's a 'rough' example. Most of the adds I've seen show about 45% increase with the JRSC. so assuming you have a VTEC SOHC rated at 127HP+45%=184CRANK HP. Now drivetrain losses will sap power by (let's say) 18%. So that means 184 x .82= 150.88 WHP.

So, with that being 'said', let's back figure what percent increase you need to reach a power goal of 235 whp. 235/.82=286.6 crank hp. 286.6/127=2.26 or make your car produces 2.26 times the stock CRANK HP. The only way I know of doing that on a SOHC is with a fortified bottom end and a good size turbo. The JRSC (imo) can't flow enough air at that boost level to reach your goal, and if it could, the air would be so hot that detonation would be a problem.

This is my thinking on the subject.

First step...Buy a Helms manual or something simaler with tourqe specs and other important info.
Second step...Do lots of reserch (I personaly hate to spend that much money on something I may regret or want to change shortly after I install it so reserch is key)
Third step...save up enough money to buy all the parts and any machine work that may need to be done.
Fourth step...Buy the parts
Fifth step...Pull the motor
Sixth step...tear down and rebuild the motor the way YOU want it
Seventh step...Install the motor
Eighth step...Tune
Nineth step...Enjoy your shit to the fullest.

I may have not thought of a few things but you get the idea. This however is only one mans opinion.

Good Luck!

How close do you think he would be with bulit bottom end, cam, + all bolt ons and a tune? (I know not 235, but approx. where)?

If you want to supercharge for that level the JRSC isnt going to be a good setup. I would look into a custom procharged setup.

first off, everything I've read about JRSC setups says not to use different cams. Unless they offer the setup with the larger blower unit (i think its M62 vs the smaller M45) for the D series, which I doubt. I think that he'll run out of blower flow/efficiency @175 whp. And of course at that level you don't even need to spend the extra money on rods/pistons. My y7 motor made 164whp on 8psi, with a crappy (rich) tune on a hot day. It's still running 30k later on 12psi, on stock internals.

It would be a fun car to drive as the SC will make the car feel like it has a larger displacement engine, but ultimately the turbo will make more HP/lb of boost (assuming a good tune).

again, just my opinion based on what I 'know'.

It really depends on what he wants to use the car for. DD, Road race, Drag, burnout contests, etc..If he wants a fun, powerful DD that requires no extra maintenance and is very reliable, bolt on the SC with a high boost pulley, some bigger injectors and tune it conservatively. If he wants all out power (relatively) then the turbo is the way to go.

Read Maximum Boost by Corky Bell (Amazon has it) and you'll see why a lot of people turbo Hondas.

your right diff cams is a no no, i do not drive this car as a dd or in winter just weekends pretty much, and i wanna be able to track it for long periods of time and be able to withstand those high revs etc for awhile

thanks for this advice maybe a turbo set up that makes good boost quickly for track use and autocross would be better?

Isn't boosting your car going to bump you up in to a more competative class for Autocross?
