D16 vtec problems.

Post by No Dig »

Ill make it short and sweet. Bought a 92 si, had a CEL for #21 vtec spool solenoid.

The previous owner had all the vtec wiring bypassed and had vtec ran straight to ECU, I eliminated all of this, soldiered and did everything correctly from the factory orange wire with white stripe on ECU to the factory green yellow stripe wire that plugs into vtec.

Ohm checked everything from ECU, pings the guage perfect, checked all connections from wiring to plug from plug to solenoid. Pulled solenoid off, cleaned screen, gave it a small 12V jump and it clicks correctly.

CEL wont go away (obvious reset ECU) Problem is, comes in right away even with car off and doesnt go away after any ammount of driving.

I've searched just about every forum on the planet and have found no answers other then check wiring/clean screen.

any ideas would be greatly appreciated, my only thoughts are a.)solenoid is trash, or b.) ecu is possibly trashed. Has a sticker on ECU stating something about remanufactured date is from 2003 and it says void if sticker is removed making me think this may have been a problem for the car before.

also, everything on the car is 100% stock. No vtec controller or anything.

Im almost 90 % sure its the ECU. Like I said vtec sol engages like it should when hit with 12v. ohm tested all wires from wire that goes into solenoid (after plug) to orange wire/white stripe on ECU and theres nothing wrong there.

anyway, n2hifis going to bring his hatch over sunday hopefully, throw his ecu in there and give it a go, wish me luck guys.

Ohm tested everything via service manual PDF from guy on stlsr, all checked out, pulled ecu out, found big burnt spot on c15 transistor, bummer, going to take a nap and hope n2hifi calls me and is comming out to try his ECU, really wanting to get back into hondas more hardcore then i did with my white one and hoping for little to no more major problems.

Plans so far, weld in new rear fenders, slam on some slip streams, roll around for a while, then something major once i get bored.

you need to try a new ecu. also i have heard that if you dont have a 4 wire O2 plug then vtec doesnt work properly. But im sure you have a 4 wire O2 being a stock si. just put a new ecu on it. p28 or a p30.

But to me it sounds like you have to try a new ecu bc, all of the other problems you have looked into silenoid, and wiring(checked with volt meter). If that all checks out then you need to get another ecu.

bought one friday, should be here within a few hours, Im hoping that does the trick because if not im out of ideas. Speedo isnt working (at all) even with car standing still. Swapped speedo motors with one that works and it still isnt working. on the back of my ECU theres a hole burnt through some of the circuitry where the remanufacture soldiered in a new capacitor. I'm hoping this new ECu fixes it because Im almost out of ideas.
