Rear Shock Mount Bolts/RLCA's

Post by .Smitty. »

So I recently purchased some Ground Controls and Koni Yellows. I started my install on them and everything was going alright until we got to the rear removal: the shock mount bolt that goes through the shock and LCA was frozen.
I used H-T search, and decided to try cutting the nut off of the shock and punching the bolt through the other way. The nut came off easy enough, but the bolt still wounldn't budge, it had be to seized.
Cut off the head of the bolt to try pushing it out the other way and still no luck.

Note: Both passenger and driver side shock mount bolts are seized.

I have pretty much come to the conclusion that I don't want to spend even more time on this and I need to get the car on the road. My thought was to cut part of the "n" of the shock mount and slide the brake line through there (since they routed the brake line between the shock and the LCA) and then unbolt the shock and LCA at the same time, keeping them together, and just buying some BLOX LCA's for 90 bucks shipped. New LCA's were on my list after installing the GC/Koni, but not planned for right now.

The problem with this is that I might have another LCA bolt seized, bringing my total to 3. I can removed all of the bolts holding in the LCA and shock besides 1, the other two just hold the shock and LCA together. How can I get this bolt to come out? I have a breaker bar that I'm using and PB Blaster.:dunno:

This seems like the easiest and I'll be getting a part that I was interested in.

Any advice on what else I can do? I know about the article on T-I but damn, that seems like a lot of work just to save the stock LCA. Not to mention that both the left and right bolts are seized, so double that. :violent1: Also, getting a new bushing pressed in would be almost as much as just getting new LCA's, correct?

Also, anything on which LCA's to get? My mindset is that they're all the same: a piece of metal with (for the most part, until you spend some $$) rubber bushings, so why not just get BLOX?

If anyone can visualize, here's a link to a picture from Acura:
http://www.acuraautomotiveparts.org/acu ... iew=normal

In the picture, both of the #34 bolts are seized on the passenger side, and only the shock mount on the driver side.

Cliffs:
Tried installing GC/Koni Yellow
On rear, both sides, shock mount bolt is seized
Tried PB Blaster, breaker bar with no luck
Cut nut and head off of bolt and tried pushing out - nothing
Thinking of uninstalling LCA and Shock/Spring set and replacing all at once
Still have Another LCA bolt keeping me from removing everything - think it's seized too - See link for picture with detail

Thanks for anyone's help!

I had the same prob. when I was working with MikeCX93 on his suspension. The bolt that's seized in there, ya it's not coming out, we ended up just getting another lca and calling it a day. Also from what I've heard Blox lca's arejust as good as any, if not better. Hope I helped a little.

i like how you put the cliff notes on there, made it way easier for me.

anyways, everyone has this problem. if you can get the lca's out do that, its pretty much your only option. keep soaking the subframe bolts and the bolts that hold the lca in. hopefully they will come out. have you tried using an impact gun?

As for after market LCA's, i have the blox, they are good for the price, but the hard rubber bushings are shit. skunk2 are the way to go if your looking for budget and quality IMO. my buddy has Omni Power LCA's for sale, let me know if you're interested.

Thanks Kage, I think that's what I'm going to have to do.

eh2_Erik - yeah the impact I used was up to 120psi on the compressor and still didn't move anything. Maybe I should go borrow that again and try it on the LCA bolt that's stuck now. That just got my mind moving..thanks

And I'm definitely interested in the Omni's - how much does he want? And are they in good condition? I need to go pick up some anti-seize when I'm getting this all put back together. I might just post up a WTB.

Sorry about the really long first post, I'm horrible at explaining things so I figured cliffs would 1. help people to understand my jumbled thoughts, and 2. get more answers.

ive been using megan racing lca's for a ouple years now... pretty much with any aftermarket lca you are going to need to replace the junk ass bushings in them with energy suspension.

Update:

My dad and I got underneath the car yesterday armed with a new array of tools and used an angle grinder with a brand spankin' new metal grinder and it cut right through the shock mount. The mount then popped off and we could 1. remove the LCA by itself and 2. get the brake line out of the way because of this. After getting the two last top mount bolts in the top hats off, the driver side was completely off.

We also picked up some OMNI RLCA's from Andy aka honduhej1, that after a bit of elbow grease and some aluminum wax, look practically brand new! Good deal.

There has been a pleathura of parts bought for this. For example: only yesterday we bought two different metal grinder bits, two different sockets (1 5mm allen head 3/8 drive and a 14mm deep 12 tooth 1/2 drive), more liquid wrench, RLCA's, a screw extractor (yet to be tried) and probably even more things we forgot to mention.

We called up one of my friend's dad who owns a 69 Camero that knows frozen bolts. After rounding off the head of bolt that is holding the LCA to the frame, the only bolt holding us back from finishing this job, he decided that on wednesday, we're going to mig weld a socket to the head of the bolt and try getting it out this way.

Any input from anyone else? The car has been up on jack's for, as of today, 6 days. I never thought I'd run into this many bolts.

To finish up, does anyone know where I can get some anti-sieze for these bolts when I'm putting everything back together?

Any objections to trying to weld the socket on? If we break the head off then I guess we'll try the bolt extractor I picked up.

Thanks for the help so far guys!

Man that took forever..but we're done! It's about a two finger gap up front and a little more than that in the rear. Thanks for the earlier help again!
