Heath Ledger was found dead in New York City Tuesday. He was pronounced dead at the scene and no cause has been determined. The New York Time reports that he was found naked and unconscious on a bed, with sleeping pills — both prescription medication and nonprescription — on a night table.”

The medical examiner tells Usmagazine.com that an autopsy will be completed on Wednesday. He was 28.

"We are investigating the possibility of an overdose. ... There were pills within the vicinity of the bed," police spokesman Paul Browne said, adding that the prescription medicine included sleeping pills.

Ledger's family reps contacted TMZ and say his death was completely accidental. His family is extremely upset by the media buzz claiming he overdosed while police told them differently. His family reports he had pneumonia.

Ledger was found in a Broome Street apartment in Manhattan's Soho neighborhood by his housekeeper and a masseuse with whom he had scheduled an appointment.

The New York Times reports that according to police, a masseuse arrived to give Ledger a massage around 3:30 pm EST. The masseuse was admitted to the apartment by the housekeeper, and when Ledger didn't answer his bedroom door, the housekeeper and masseuse found him unconscious in his bedroom with a bottle of pills nearby. The cleaning lady called the police while the masseuse called the Olsen twins' bodyguard, reports TMZ. The bodyguard is apparently an EMT and was around the block at Ashley's. By the time the bodyguard arrived the police were already at the scene.

TMZ.com reports that when paramedics arrived, Ledger was in full cardiac arrest. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 3:45 pm EST.

Ledger, originally of Perth, Australia, gained critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for his role in the 2005 film Brokeback Mountain.

He has a two-year-old daughter, Matilda Rose, with former girlfriend and Brokeback Mountain co-star Michelle Williams. The pair ended their relationship in September 2007, but shared custody of Matilda. Williams is 'devastated' by the news of her former fiance.

Ledger plays the Joker in the upcoming Batman film, The Dark Night, which is due out this year. His other film credits include "10 Things I Hate About You," "A Knight's Tale," "The Patriot," and "Monster's Ball."
