The only benefit I can see, is that if your car is stolen, and they're in pursuit, they can just shut it down and hope they don't ram it into something.

...Other than that...ghey to the max:disgust: GM sucks

Do you think it will still work if you don't sign up/activate the On-Star? It is a service that you pay for.

Thats a good question. Also, I'm sure real thieves will find a way around this eventually.

Onstar hardware is always enabled. you can be not signed up, have a problem and call them on the spot, enable it, be billed, and they activate it on the spot. its always on, you just cant always utilize it.

Now since its always on, even if its not in the EULA, the county/city could get a court order to force onstar to enable and use it regardless of if the owner has agreed for it to be enabled. Not doing so would be interfearing with police actions.

The real issue here is how long after this is voluntarily offered, is it mandated by law? Same thing as seatbelts/airbags(although those, atleast the seatbelt, are worthwhile requirments).

Legislation is being passed in the UK to mandate this already, along with movments to require GPS.

Also, how long until its hacked? onstar doesnt use unique encryption keys. The iphone was hacked by a 17 y/o in what liek a week? How long until some kid on hall street buys a kit off ebay and can press a button halfway thru a race and kill yr car?(if it were on every car).

How long until we have a camera system like the UK where the govt can run a data base search and get minute by minute photos of your car on every road its on, on any given day or time, then calculate speed, record how many times you visit a residence of questionable activity, make illegal turns, drive a car with expired tags, etc. Then how long after those thigns are passed for NATIONAL SECURITY or to help in auto theft incidents, will washington start using them for reasons not intended or outlined in the original bill? How long until a senator tacks a 5 sentance clause in the middle of a thirty thousand page bill titled "The anti baby rape, troop armour udgrade, poverty ending bill"? that removes the need to have a warrent or probable cause/an ongoing investigation to acess and analyse this data? Dont think so? How about the proven fact that Washington is currently using parts of the patriot act to watch and record domestic internet traffic(including who the info was comign from and going to) without warrent or cause? Yea it will happen.

As per theives getting around it, yea no shit. We have speed gun radar jammers, how many days after this becomes legislation will professional jackers use hand held scramblers to block out the signal from onstar? or throwing a lead dentist apron over the part of the interior where the onstar hub/antena is? Or better yet, camping out on a street and using a hacked modual to disable expensive looking cars as they aproach your thug gorilla urban warrior ambush position. Nothing better than a rich man or a vulnerable young girl rolling to a stop infront of you with no way to get away.

This will lead to it being required that the onstar like system being integrated into the ECU so if it is not recieving from HQ, your car is not permited to work at all? one more seemingly protective benificial thign that gives even MORE power.
