Illinois State Police investigators are investingating a two-vehicle crash that killed a motorcycle passenger near Pere Marquette state park Sunday morning when a van turned left in front of the Harley Davidson.

Gwendolyn S. Reichert, 44 of Valmeyer, Ill., died at the scene -- on Highway 100 at the entrance to the Brussel's Ferry. She was pronounced dead by the Jersey County coroner's office.

The driver of the white, 1994 Harley Davidson Electra Glide was Charles D. VanFleet, 38 of Kampsville, Ill. He was taken by ambulance to St. John's Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis. He suffered "incapacitating injuries," according to Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Pat Murphy of District 18 Patrol headquarters in Litchfield, Ill.

The accident occured at 11:08 a.m. when the driver of a 1999 Chrysler van driven by Keith Maddox, 41 of Hartford, Ill., turned left into the path of the oncoming Harley Davidson, forcing the motorcycle to strike the van. No one in the van was injured, Maddox said.

The crash is under investigation by an Illinois State Police crash reconstruction officer, so no traffic citations have been issued yet. The results of the investigation could lead to charges against van driver Maddox.

Wow thats horrible. I absolutely HATE that they didn't make that a law, im sure this isn't the only accident where if the person would have worn a helmet they would still be here.

I can't even imagine how the mini van driver is feeling.

yeah she is on there...

i asked her what had happened (she was sitting on the side of the road by the accident) and she goes (in a chipper, laughing manner) "my parents just hit a motorcycle! hahaha"

made my stomach sick that somebody could act that way about something like that.
