Troubleshooting my internet access problem
ok...thats pretty cool, it just uses your home phone lines as a router then. Might I swapping cables from the modem to the computer? A bad cable might do this if it is getting a faulty connection/heating up. It still sounds to me like a modem issue, seeing as how everything else still works off it, except the computer it's connected to. It makes sense that it wont let you access your network through that computer when it goes affray because your no longer getting any kind of a connection at that point.

Troubleshooting my internet access problem
not to frusterate you, but it's my computer that sucks at connecting, not the one connected directly to the modem (the home computer).
I guess I will try calling SBC and seeing what they say; I just didn't want to call and talk to someone in India if I could avoid it.
does anyone have a spare SBC/Yahoo 2Wire modem I could try? I swear I was talking to someone not too long ago that had one...

This post comes with a guarantee: I guarantee that I don't care what you think about it.

Troubleshooting my internet access problem
Ok I see now, I thought your trouble was with the main computer/modem that connects to it. So while your laptop doesnt connect right through the wire deal, everything else works correct right? Meaning you have absolutley no connection problems anywhere else in the system? It's just your laptop thats giving you troubles...so you have your modem hooked to the main computer, then the pc wire connected to a usb port, then to a phone line in your house in which you connect another phone line to another pc wire and then into your laptop correct?

Does the modem plug into the phone line and then that goes into the dongle cable (link you posted) which plugs into a USB port on your pc? That sound right?
If that is, then do this:
1.a. unplug the pc port from the usb port on your pc and plug it into a different one.
1.b. If you have usb ports on the front and rear of the pc, plug it into the one that it was originally NOT plugged into.
2. If both of those do not fix it, take another computer and plug in the dongle to that. See if you can access the Internet on that computer; make sure the other methods of connecting to the Internet are disable (wireless or ethernet).
3. If it continues to not work then the problem is with the modem. If it DOES work, then the problem is with the usb port, hub, or some software related issue on your computer.

My question is: how would/could it be a software related issue at all if it only does it on one computer and he has to reset the modem to get it to work again. I could see that being it if he had to reset/restart the computerJonDubya;53014 wrote:Does the modem plug into the phone line and then that goes into the dongle cable (link you posted) which plugs into a USB port on your pc? Driver issues with the pc port device; corruption of the drivers. Closing and reopening the connection could disable/reenable the device, same goes for the hardware part. It's not likely it'll be software, but it's still a possibility. Basic rules of troubleshooting; narrow down the possibilities of the problem's source. My guess is it's the pc port dongle or the HomePNA port on the modem.g3integragsr;53021 wrote:My question is: how would/could it be a software related issue at all if it only does it on one computer and he has to reset the modem to get it to work again. i was having the same problems as you are. i would reset the modem and it would only let me on 5 minutes at a time, if that. turned out the modem was bad and we had to have it replaced. Also our cable wire that runs from the modem to outside had to be replaced as well. Got it replaced about 3 weeks ago and have not had a problem since. i would contact your ISP. they will be able to diagnose the problem for you.Spork;52924 wrote:pc port: http://www.2wire.com/?p=124
t But it is like clockwork, if I reset the modem I get everything back for a few minutes.
