Troubleshooting my internet access problem

Post by Spork »

Ok, my PC at home is conencted to the network(2wire SBCGlobal/yahoo DSL) via a 2Wire "PC Port"... this set-up has worked fine for years, but in the last 2 months has been giving me a bunch of trouble. The only way I can get online is if I disconnect the modem for the house and reset the whole network, and even then, I only get a maximum of 5 minutes until I can't connect anymore... any thoughts?

Also, does anyone have any gooood free antivirus/antispyware software that I can get a copy of? even a link might work as I can d/l on another computer and transfer it over to mine...i can't update my stuff because i can't connect...plus, my antivirus has expired since I've been w/o internet service

have you tried using a different modem? since you have been using the same one for years, its possible that its dusty or just going bad.

PC Port? Is that the same as an ethernet (RJ45) jack? Do you get disconnected or just cannot access new pages? i.e. AIM stays connected but you can't browse the web. It's quite difficult to diagnose network/Internet issues over the Internet (duh).

Have you called SBC yet to see if your problem is not an isolated issue?

Has your power gone out recently - in conjuction with the start of this problem?

Most likely it's hardware or a config issue with the modem.

Is it going through a router before hitting your computer?

pc port: http://www.2wire.com/?p=124

the power going out actually helps, usually after the power is out, or our internet goes out in a storm I can connect for a little while. When I get disconnected, it is everything, no AIM, not internet, nothing... apparently you can't even access my shared folders on the network when it happens. But it is like clockwork, if I reset the modem I get everything back for a few minutes.

are you connected to a router anywhere? if so do you have to reset that also? If there is no router connected in your network, that means it is a malfunctioning modem, I would call your ISP to have it replaced. When routers go bad they have the exact same effects....work fine but slowly after they've been reset, then just out of nowhere you have absolutley nothing.

all of the other computers in the house are fine, and there is no router in use; if the modem is bad wouldn't this effect all of the computers?

is it just your computer that cant connect to the internet, or all the computers in your house? is the modem connected directly to your computer? or is it connected to another computer in which you are connecting through your "pc port"?

how do you have multiple computers connected to a modem without a router? Typically a modem only has one output on it that either connects to a single computer or runs into a router to link multiple computers. I just don't understand how you have computers linked together without a router either.

the 2wire modems have built-in wireless, so there are at least 2 laptops that connect to that
the home computer which is run directly to the modem
and my computer which is run through the 'pc port' thing (check the link I posted for a brief overview of how that works)
