lol reading owns me too... i thought we were just talking about web servers... nmbtlfedgolf;49094 wrote:Apache cant act as a DC only a web server.
apparently reading owns you as well, it's not xp home its xp pro, i also have 2003 server, i never stated what version it was. i've had fellow coders try to break into my linux server just to try, they still haven't been able to, they do it with ease with the windows server. i also use the linux because it is open source and if i don't like something i go into the code and change it to the way i want it. as far as being cheaper, i haven't paid a cent for anything on the company's linux server we made. for our windows machines we've had to pay .btlfedgolf;49082 wrote:I was not talking to you. If you look he is using XP home as a server.
I have 24 Wintel machines and only 16 Sun boxes. In the last 4 years Not a single one of my Wintel machines have went down due to software or hardware. I lost 4 Sun boxes within that time. I have had the exact opposite experience when it comes to wintel vs unix. And for what its worth, I haven't seen a bsod on a 03 box but once, and that was hardware related.m6speed;49016 wrote:not secure, crashes a lot, linux is free, windows uses way too many resources, too many issues that i don't want to deal with. i set up a linux server the way i want it and never have to mess with it.
good deal man. i'm not trying to knock windows at all. i just like something different. i've yet to have a problem with either machine..linux or windows, only problems i've had were hardware related where something would fail. nothing to do with the os on the machines.ludeboy;49101 wrote:I have 24 Wintel machines and only 16 Sun boxes. it's all a matter of opinion and taste, whatever you like is fine, i'm used to unix/linux and coding hence why i like linux better.

guess it all depends on your knowledge of each system. we had some microsoft security guys at work that did the configuring on the microsoft servers. i have no clue what they did. we just get bored at work sometimes and play hack the box lol.btlfedgolf;49103 wrote:reading > * LOL sorry.
If your friends were able to break in with ease, then your server was not configured well. Look into Microsoft's lockdown tools. Just like Linux windows takes alot of configuration to be secure. As much as people would like to thing that windows is out of the box and go, they are wrong. As for TCO, how much does a Linux expert cost VS a Microsoft expert. Microsoft people are a dime a dozen therefore cost less keeping the TCO down. there are alot more factors than just out of the box price for TCO. In the end your right its preference and what your comfortable with. There is no way I would know how to lock down a Linux box to the degree i can lock down a windows server.
You have free time??? THAT IS NOT FAIR!!!!!m6speed;49105 wrote:guess it all depends on your knowledge of each system. we had some microsoft security guys at work that did the configuring on the microsoft servers. i have no clue what they did. we just get bored at work sometimes and play hack the box lol.
