My windows servers could churn through terrabytes of data too, its nothing new. I have one at work running over 15 instances of the JVM at about 1 GB of ram each. On that server are 18 Apache sites and 2 IIS sites. The server runs cool and calm all day. We are splitting it up, not because the box is strained, but it is bad architecture.m6speed;49019 wrote:is the server used for anything else besides this forum? we use the linux servers to process quite a few terrabytes of data a day, run multiple web sites, run a sql database, and numerous other apps and data storage.
Linux more secure, that funny. I dont call anything with an open source secure. The loop holes are published you just have to find them.
Windows crashing, thats also funny. I have had computers up for months at a time. My record was 1 year and 2 months on an NT4 box.
Finally if you look into TCO for the 2 OSes, windows is cheaper for a corporation. Since this is used for business I will cater to them.
Most people that use Linux do it because they want the status of knowing how to use it. They hate Microsoft for charging for there os, but its called business. How many *nix/BSD flavors have come and gone while Microsoft stands strong. Notice how most of the major distros are starting to follow the microsoft model? Redhat, suse, smoothwall, and Mandriva have all started to charge not for support, but for the actual product.
