JDM Yo...
This doesn't really make sense. You say its a whole new car over there. Well, its a whole new car regardless how you look at it. They spend the money to create a completely second car that comes over here. Keep the same stuff on the car they are already producing and stop having to make 2 different cars for 2 different countries. <---Less cost. More time spent elsewhere.budget_crx;40178 wrote:Converting to LHD would be an isssue seeing as that the Type R, for example, is more than just a Civic Si with a more powerful engine, so its more than just an engine swap. It has a different suspension setup, different body panels, lights and even interior pieces. So it wouldn't be that Honda was taking the Civics that were already in the states and giving them more umpph, its actually a "whole new car."
I do have a question about engine size like you stated above. My year Si ('99-00), obviously has a different engine than the JDM Civic R. How much bigger could the engine be since they are both 1.6 liters. Not enough to greatly need the upped suspension parts.
I don't know. I don't think the added expense is there for this. IMO, I think it would cost less to build one car and send it to both spots.

I see what you are saying and that would make great sense if they in fact could use the parts from an already LHD civic for the interiors, brakes, blah blah. But since the Type R is a specialty vehicle with all of this stuff upgraded they would have 2 choices:SweetEBPSi;40193 wrote:This doesn't really make sense. You say its a whole new car over there. 1. Use "similar" parts off of an LHD Si that would need to be changed for the conversion, or
2. Develop new Type R equivalents that are setup for a LHD car
If they didn't make new parts that perform EXACTLY like the JDM equivalents, we would still be getting a slightly watered down version.
The suspension differences wouldn't be because the size of the engine, the components changed on most cars aren't ever to support a heavier engine (unless on trucks) but to improve handling. coponents like adjustable shocks, strut bars, sway bars, things that can be used for racing (which is what the Type R is made for)
I have delt with the safety regulations of older JDM cars and tthey were quite expensive, newer cars have even stricter regulations so more many components would have to be changed, raising the price like crazy. Either way, if it wasn't an extra cost then why wouldn't they already be sending these cars here? I haven't seen a 22B running around anywhere lol :dunno:
BTW: you going to DQ right Paul?

Thats what I mean. If you really think about it, the only thing that would really need to be changed are the interior dash, firewall, and whatever the needs for the engine for smog. The US Si is a specialty car as well. The suspension is upgraded. Its definately not the same as an Ex. In my mind, I think they are spending more money on doing the R&D for making 2 cars (one for there and one for here), than it would cost to just do the R&D for a few of the differences to bring the same car here.budget_crx;40200 wrote:I see what you are saying and that would make great sense if they in fact could use the parts from an already LHD civic for the interiors, brakes, blah blah. I believe I'm going to DQ. You going to take the crx out this time? Its not that far from your house. I'm sure you won't get pulled over. I don't think Angies's parents or Shawn are going to be there. They are going to the Lake of the Ozarks for the Magic Dragon show.
