The 180SX is the JDM equivalent of the 240SX hatchback. The JDM equivalent of the 240SX coupe was known as the silvia and did not feature the pop-up headlights. For this reason Silvia front ends were cheaper to put on than the 180's pop ups. When drifters wrecked on the mountain, most swiched to the Silvia front end to save money, these are the homemade Sileightys.
Nissan caught on to the fad and realised the profit that could be made from making a factory drift machine. So they started producing thier own Sileightys. these sileightys are distinctive from thier homemade counterparts by the "Sileighty" writing in the rear tails.
These factory drift cars were also rumored to have 24 more hp from new cams and slight ecu work. They also featured a harder rear suspension in order to help with the drifting
Nissan became worried that thier reputation would be lost if people found out they built a car for illegal activites so the production number stayed at 400. Brand new these cars sold for as much as the R32 Skylin GTR.

homemade sileighties are distinguished by the 180SX badging on the B pillar and real tails. sometimes GTR style grilles were used instead of the stock Silvia grilles to get rid of the Silvia script.
