I'd assume it was some kinda sick brainwashing shit, or making the kid live in fear of what would happen to him and/or his family if he did try to escape and such.

That, or maybe the kid had a bad homelife and didn't care to go back.
Could speculate all day really, but, we won't know until they release all the info about it, if they even do.
