RCOTW 1964 Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt

Post by budget_crx »

In 1963 Ford decided it needed something new to compete with MaxWedge mopars and the soon to be released HEMI In the drag racing circuit. So they took 100 Fairlane 500 2 door sedans and prepped them to be all out drag monsters. Their goal was to produce a drag race-only machine for Super Stock, Super Stock Automatic, and A/FX class competition

First to be dealt with was the engine, Ford used a 427Ci engine with dual 4 barrell carburetors and removed headlights for cold air induction. As far as transmissions go, 59 were 3 speed automatics and 41 were four speed manuals. This powertrain combonation along with the great weight savings ford incorparated had the cars running 11.6- 12 sec quarter miles

Factory fit modifications to save weight included a stripped interior with no radio or a/c, no carpeting, no rear window regulators, plexiglass windows, fiberglass fenders and hood, and fiberglass bumpers

^ note the removal of high beams in order to flow cold air directly to the engine

I drove a 500 before and those things are bricks. It would take alot of power and stripping to get it into the 11s. Impressive.
