guidelines for a good password

i wrote this bulletin on myspace, thought i should post it here also, stop the spamming change your passwords...

I have noticed a lot more people with stolen passwords. I thought i would help you guys out on picking a good password thats hard to figure out. You want numbers and letters ie: orion802cex, thats some random word (not your name your pets name or any name thats easy to figure out) look around on things you have laying around and pick a word thats not common and a license plate (not necessarily your own). This isnt the best way but its easy to make a password thats easy to remember but not as easy to figure out.

Now for a better way, dont use common names or places, dont use letters that repeat, dont use words in the dictionary, dont use letters in a sequence on the keyboard like "qwerty" and dont use the word "password". take a sentence like this...

I hate it when people steal my password!

Take the first letter of each word, "Ihiwpsmp!" use the exclamation point also, im not sure if myspace allows this, but if it does use it, notice the "I" is uppercase. Make it at least 6 characters in length using numbers and symbols for instance "Ihiwpsmp!802" using the letters from the sentence and 3 numbers from a license plate or any random set of numbers in any random place like "Ihi8wps0mp!2", just make sure you can remember them. Make sure you throw in an uppercase letter too, if myspace passwords are case sensitive, it helps. I hope this helps people in choosing better passwords, i hate it when it happens, its stupid and needs to stop!!!

its unix guidelines, the second part anyway, what would you recommend?

just using more complex strings, including upper/lower case letters, numbers and symbols. Numerical or symbolic representation of letters is one easy way to do so. Say your password is 'sandy' (weak); $4nD7 is an example of a strong version of 'sandy'...now some systems don't allow symbols as the first char so use a 5 or whatever instead.

I also believe in physical password security...meaning if someone is looking over your shoulder, the faster you can type your password correctly, the less likely they are able to figure out what it is.
