Tokico- Illumina or HP Blue?

Post by luthoro »

I've got about half of what I need to rebuild my suspension except new struts and springs, which I expect to order sometime this month. It will still be a while to everything gets installed because I don't have my brake upgrades, bigger sway bars, or poly bushing kit yet either, but struts/springs are what I am ordering next. I have already decided on Tokico for the struts due to my friend Brandon's good experience putting HP Blues on his Lude.

I already have a full front end kit w/ upper control arms, upper and lower ball joints, tie rod ends...also a toe and camber correction kit for the front, a camber correction kit for the rear, a full set of strut tie bars (f&r upper and r lower). The reason my ball joints and shit is all bad again is because whoever lowered this car before I owned it just threw drop springs on factory struts and called it done...I've already been through one full set of ball joints as a result...this time I intend to do it right.

I will also be installing Suspension Techniques larger sway bars front and rear, an Energy Suspension polyurethane master kit, and will be upgrading to drilled/slotted rotors and Hawk HPS pads on all four corners and stainless braided lines at the same time (originally I was going to do dual piston calipers up front as well, then I decided that would probably be overkill on a DD), then when I take it to Fry's Dobbs (right up the road from where I live) to get the alignment done I'm gonna have them fix my ABS at the same time.

The plan is to gather up all the parts and then spend an entire weekend when I'm in town putting everything in, but this will probably not be for another few months yet due to other expenses and my not-unlimited income. I had sent a message to Rick asking how much he would charge to help me with the install, but I never got a reply. Anyway...

What I haven't decided is if I want to just get Tokico Blue and Tokico springs for around $500, or if I want to drop the extra coin on Tokico Illumina adjustables and Neuspeed Race springs for around $650...

any experience with these? I realize that Illuminas on Race springs will hurt my ride quality to some degree, but a slightly rougher ride doesn't bother me. Would the difference in cornering ability be worth the extra money for Illumina adjustables with Neuspeed Race springs?

Well, if I just get HP Blues I would get them with Tokico's matched springs, since I have no clue what kind of springs are currently on my car. If I were to take a guess I'd say they are probably some sorta eBay Special progressive rate garbage.

+1 on the blues, if your sticking with stock height go blue. If your planning on lowering anything more than an inch it would be in your better interest to just spend the extra money on the illumina setup. IMO.

I have the blues with Tokico springs on my CRX, and like stated, you can't expect them to do anything more than slightly better than stock.

My 91 Civic sedan has Illumina's and they are great. Good handling with managable ride even on the stiffest setting.
