DIY: Power Steering Delete OEM Parts Free! 3rd gen tegs

Ok, sorry for the crappy pics, but this may help some if interested.

Well I have seen a few of these threads on here and other places, but its hard to find one that was completed. (At least that I could find.) This allows you to get rid of the ugly/extra unneeded lbs of a power steering system using all of your parts on ur 3rd gen teg.

What you will need-
*Nothing but tools and power steering fluid!

My high pressure line busted on me, causing a big mess. So since I was thinking about pulling it off anyways, this confirmed my choice.

First, of course you can start by removing the power steering belt, pump, and pump mounts, and resevor/resevor mount .

Next you can unbolt the hard lines located here that are held on by 3 10mm bolts.

Image

Image

Then Cut the soft line connected to those hard lines on the bend shown here.

Image

Then you can remove the entire line.

Image

Next you can take out this bolt located on the sub brace holding the hard line high pressure line coming out of the rack where the steering knuckle is.

Image

Image

Then you will loosen this bolt that holds the hard line into the rack shown here.

Image

Then you can take out the high pressure line.

Image

Now everything is out. And in my case, the hight pressure line was the one that busted on me. So I just cut the line and pulled the bolt off of it to reuse. (If you dont want to do that, then just find a bolt that will go back in the rack and that is hollow.)

Now you can put the bolt back in and tighten it up.

Image

Then you will have to bend the OEM resevor mount to fit onto the hole from the bolt that you took off of the sub brace that was holding the hard line on it. Also make sure to give the mount enough bends to clear any brake lines or what not.

Image

Then slide the resevor on the mount, and hook this lines back up to the rack from the resevor. This is how I did it.

Then just turn the wheel to release any unwanted fluid. After it stops filling back up in the resevor (if it does it) then fill the resevor back up with fluid until both lines are plenty covered up so they dont suck air in.

And you are done, check for leaks and retighten if needed. Here is what it looks like when looking behind the intake manifold from the top. Out of sight, while still functionable.

nice write up! i've seen other ones where they use an extra clutch reservoir for the fluid.

actually this is more of a relocation D.I.Y. since you actually are using the resevor a delete would acctually mean that its gone no longer to be used. in technical terms. but very goop pics and nice write up.

Yeah I see what you're saying. I just kept the resevor bc a lotta ppl have said it makes it easyer than just looping the lines.

OMG...shut up. It's like you always have to prove someone wrong about something.

Good write up, I have seen this before. I wish I had all the components to do this as well, but sadly, my car came without it when I purchased it.
I'm still a neighborhood ASSHOLE!

You have to have a reservoir with fluid in it to keep the rack lubricated. Thats a part of ANY power steering delete when using a power rack. The only way to completely delete the entire power steering system is to swap in a manual steering rack. So yes, this is a DIY power steering delete.

Good work. I would have done things a little different but if it works, it works. And you're having no leaks with those lines?
