obd2a dizzy to obd2b wiring + other ??s

Post by lowinmo »

I posted this in another section here and got ZERO response, maybe put it in the wrong section. Im in the middle of a swap on my 2000 EX civic. Here is the run down.

2000 EX civic
b18b
obd2b vtec engine harness from a y8
Phearable.net p28 chipped w/ chrome
obd2b to obd1 jumper harness

I have a obd2a harness that came with the motor but it is auto, hacked and non vtec. That is why I reused the harness from my stock Y8. Everything pNp just fine with the B18b, only had the expected open plugs (knock, crank position, vtec)

The questions-
-this engine harness should work. I eventually will do a lsvtec build.
-using a obd2a dizzy that I re-pinned, what is the thicker blue wire for? I left it open when I re-pinned.
- Does the obd2b use the crankshaft positioning sensor for the tach? (plug down at the crank pulley)

if anyone thinks of anything I missed or just has a thought please chime in. Thanks all.

I can't offer any definite answers but I can give some advise.

I would put everything together with the blue wire, which is the engine speed output signal wire, left disconnected and see if the tachometer works and the car drives properly. It seems that a couple people have done this without issues, but I'm not sure how.

If that doesn't work, it looks like you'll have to do a little wiring. The blue engine speed output wire will have to be run inside the car to the 20-pin white or orange junction connector near the right kick panel. According to the ETM, it will need to be inserted into pin 3 on the connector. There should already be a wire here coming from the A19 pin at the ECU. From that point the wiring is the same from '96-'00. The difference is the '96-'98 OBD2A ICM inside the distributor sends the signal to the 20-pin junction connector while the '99-'00 OBD2B ECU sends the signal to the 20 pin junction connector.

I'm not sure how the OBD2B Civics determine engine speed. I assume that the ECU takes the inputs from the CKP, CYP and TDC sensors inside the distributor and sends it's own signal to the tach. The crankshaft position sensor, or CKP, is actually located inside the distributor on all '96-'00 Civics. You're confusing it with the crankshaft fluctuation sensor located on the oil pump housing at the pulley end of the crankshaft. As far as I know, that sensor plays no role in determining the signal output for the tachometer. It's just there to detect misfires. The P28 doesn't look for that sensor so there is no need to have it.

I will see what happens tomorrow. Still waiting on my obd2b to obd1 jumper harness. I need this bitch to live. My wagon is eating me alive in gas.

According to the FFS diagram, I was right in thinking that you'll need to wire in that engine speed signal wire. If you need any pictures or wiring diagrams for it, let me know.

:rocker: IT LIVES !!!!:partydance:

Harness came in today finally. Plugged her in, checked fluids and she fired right up. Smooth idle, no cel and the tach works.

Thanks all for the help. Now I can but together a build thread. I'll post a link back here later.

i broke it already. 14 miles into the first drive and I popped the torque bar for the shift linkage off the tranny. Got a small coolent leak and need to figure out why I have a cel and the speedo ain't working. Speedo was working initially. Cel and speedo issue happened same time as the torque bar, the issues have to be linked. Guess she cant take a pull to 7500 yet. :drive: Before the sudden issues thou I was able to get a smooth pull up to 130mph
