So by saying "they only consume oil if they arent maintained properly" you mean that they are run hard? no tunes ups? late oil changes? wrong oil?

I only ask because Im not sure what improper maintenance can cause an engine with 30k-100k miles to burn oil other than running the crap out of it.

thanks for the imput
What I mean is that scheduled maintenance needs to be completed on time, including oil changes.

And I'd encourage you to run it hard too. I'm sure you know that VW 1.8Ts are know for consuming oil since you owned one. The owners manual even says they do and says to check your oil at every fuel fill-up. I have 77k miles on mine and it sees full throttle, full boost, redline and at least 70 MPH (If I'm taking the highway) every drive cycle. I've done this for 12k miles and never consumed a drop of oil. I've always run my Hondas like this as well and only had an issue with one that had 287k miles.

I have used many different oils in my Type S. Before i rebuilt my motor I used royal purple, Amsoil, and mobil 1. Now I just use Mobil 1 5w-30 b/c it is so much easier to get ahold of since I cant find anyone around here to sell the amsoil.

Also vtec will burn oil. So if you are hitting vtec all the time it will burn more oil. But the base dont have "VTEC" only on 1 cam so i wouldnt think you should have a problem.

Also your car can burn oil by sucking oil through the pcv into the intake manifold and burn it that way tooo which gums up the motor and manifold and is one of the leading causes to sluggish or a power loss in the motor.

Also things like everyone else said like not maintaining their motor or bad piston rings but this you will most likely know.

You know how else you can burn oil? Throw a rod through your block and start an oil fire. Best way to burn it.
