2000 Accord throwing codes

Post by Devilchrono »

So, my dad took the Accord for a spin today, and the check engine light came on. He took it to O'reilly's and had them pull them for him and tell him what they say. One was P0401- they said it was the EGR valve, so it's got a brand new one on there as of now. The next were P1366 & P1361, and all they said they could tell him was that it was for the cam sensor, they said he'd have to take it to a Honda dealer to get a more detailed answer. Just wondering if anyone can help us out here, cause the car is up for sale, and he want's it to be reliable for the next owner.

TIA,

Devil

on those older v6 accords, the egr ports get clogged in the intake manifold and you have to pull it off and clean the egr ports and install a metal sleeve into the port to try and fix this. if your accord has more than 100k on it, it probably ahs already ahd this once. but the 1361 and 1366 indicate that tdc 1 and tdc 2 hace both failed. i would reset the pcm and see if they come back. it is very rare that one of these would fail, let alone both, unless you ahve a junk pcm.

thanks, i'll let him know. also, he just told me that all this started after he hosed the motor down and cleaned it on the last nice day we had before it got really cold and we got all that snow. so, what are the chances he fried something then?

its hard to tell. maybe just let it sit for a while and kind of dry depending on how extensive he got with hose, then rest the pcm and see if the code comes back. the egr valve replacement may keep that one away for a while since i assume the code was EGR insufficient lift. all in all, nothing too expensive to fix.

thanks man. if both those sensors need to be replaced though, how much would it cost? he'd like a honda certified mechanic to do it if they need replaced, but doesn't want to have to take it to the dealer and have to pay out the ass on it. he's kind of looking for someone who does side work...

truthfully, i seriously doubt both sensors took a dump on you. let it dry out and reset the pcm and see what happens

Ok, so he reset the codes and drove it for awhile yesterday and the CE light came on again. The only code it threw this time was the EGR one again. He's wondering if someone could give him some detailed instructions on how to go about cleaning that port so that it won't do this again.

1. remove the throttle body
2. pull off upper intake manifold (disconnect the vacuum lines in the rear and what not)
3. flip it over and you will see some ports near the TB end of the manifold that are clogged full of shit
4. take a screw driver or punch(anything that will fit in there) and clean those bad boys out and spray brake clean in them to aid in the removal of it
5. then, after the majority of it is cleaned out, i spray my air hose into all the runners and ports to get that debris out
6. reinstall everything you took off.

this is just from memory so give me a break if i forgot something, also remove the egr valve and clean those ports as well

Thanks, he's working on it now. We'll see if he did it right and if the code comes back
