Need help!

Post by Simon91 »

I was driving my car yesterday (91 civic si stock tranny, fairly new clutch and flywheel) and as i went to downshift to 2nd it wouldnt go in to gear. so i coasted to a stop on the shoulder and found out it wouldnt let me shift into any gears at all. so then i tried to put it in reverse and it grinned pretty loud and clunked into reverse and stalled the car. i went to turn it over and it started right up so i put it in gear and very cautiously drove off. for the rest of the day it drove pretty good, but today it did the same thing as i tried to downshift so i stoped clunked it into reverse then put it in first and drove away. i know i probably shouldnt be driving it but i have no choice its my only car. also i did notice recently that my axles where going out and there is a small tear in the boot and i wasnt sure if this could be causing something this big. so could this be something as simple as not having enough or the right kind of tranny fluid or more serious like sycros or i just need a new transmission? PLEASE HELP i know next to nothing about transmissions.

tranny was rebuilt during d16y8 swap by previous owner in 2011. i bought the car in november and havent checked it yet. but i will be buying new tranny fluid and doing a flush tomorrow. that was the first thing on my list of attempts to fix the problem.

I'm not sure on the 91's but most civics and... a lot of cars have a fill plug on the side.
The way to know it is full is keep filling it up until it runs out. You can take that plug out and stick your finger in there to feel the fluid. It should be lined up with the hole basically.

If you only jack up the front, account for the lean

No need to "flush" the fluid, that won't do anything. Just make sure it's filled properly. And use the correct fluid as well. Honda MTF or 10W-30 motor oil are the only recommended fluids. Any other fluid will cause excessive transmission noise or damage.

I hear what you're sayin, the reason I want to do the "flush" though is because I don't know if the previous owner put some cheap shit in there and thats why this is happening. And I just picked up some Honda transmission fluid from my local dealership.
