Intermediate Shaft ?'s

Post by lowinmo »

Does the B18 use a different intermediate shaft carrier then the B16?

I got a B18b block mated to S4C tranny and it keeps blowing the output seal for the intermediate shaft. All the peeps I've talked to says that it's the JDM S4C tranny by the code on it. Do I have to use a JDM specific seal or is there a USDM counter part?

I have already tried the seal for the 99' 00' SI with the S4C and it died. I'm trying an odd one today that we came up with just from measurements.

Any impute is better then none. I'm wondering if I need a different carrier mount.

To my knowledge theyre the same. I had an intermediate shaft that was slightly tweaked one time and it cost me 3 transmissions. When you slide it in the trans do the bolts thread in without any issues at all?

Auto and manual are different and there are 2 different sizes of seals that go in the transmission. Measure the sealing surface on the I shaft and make sure you have the right one.

Bolts can thread in by hand, all three (3). It's in a manual tranny of course. We did measure the impute shaft, that's how we determined what size seal to get.

After some very cold time under the car this is what I came up with. The shaft sits at a slight angle to the tranny. This may or may not be how they come but it causes the shaft to push to one side of the seal and leave a slight gab on the other, hence why my tranny fluid goes bye bye.

my solution is to remove a slight amount of material from the mating surface of the mount on the lower 2 bolt holes at angle of bout 1.5 degrees and shim the top hole. This will correct the angle of the shaft and hopefully resolve my issue.

Fingers crossed. And how can you tell the difference between a auto and manual intermediate shaft? Different numbers stamped on the perhaps?

I would try a known good halfshaft, if that one has a slight bend eventually its going to cause worse problems than wearing out seals, trust me. And then if that doesn't fix the issue at least you have piece of mind knowing the halfshaft isnt the problem.

If it's at an angle, I'm guessing you have an automatic half shaft. I figured you had a manual trans, I was just explaining what variants of the shaft you may see. Find another halfshaft that you KNOW is from a manual and put it in there. I'm guessing your problem will be solved.

My previous idea = FAIL

Ya'll know anyone that has a good intermediate shaft? Will a shaft from a B18a integra work? None of the yards around me have any newer teggy's.

Problem fixed. The retard that I got the set from had a AUTO intermediate shaft in there. My buddies found me one from a B16 today, got it in and only have a slight drip. A new seal tomorrow and she'll be all good.
