trans wont go into gear at all after sitting a few days

Post by ejtuner88 »

I have a '93 civic d16z6 with a crx dx trans in it. trans has 130,000 miles on it. i started hearing a growling noise that went away with the clutch engaged and was occasionally hard to shift so i figured it was the throwout bearing. well the other day i parked it to do some suspension work and when i went to take it for a test drive a few days later it wouldnt go into gear at all. I just replaced the bearing (that did show alot of heat damage) and its doing the exact same thing. its full of fluid, clutch pedal feels fine and the fork didnt look bent at all. any ideas?

you should be using regular 10w30 motor oil.

online honda manual says otherwise:
http://media.honda.co.uk/car/owner/medi ... 00/8-2.pdf

to op, how long have you been using the gear oil?

i put it in when i first converted it, then put honda mtf in it. but the gear oil seemed to work pretty well. but it started grinding with the mtf in it.

Those service manuals are now nearly 20-years-old. Honda has recommended using Honda MTF in all M/T equipped vehicles (Except the Passport) since '96. Using 10W-30 is fine, however Honda MTF is a better fluid as it reduces wear and noise.

I don't understand where people get the idea to put fluids like 75W-90 in their transmissions. It is not better then Honda MTF.
