Soooo recently I've been getting a 3rd gear grind, all the time at high rpm, every once in a while normal driving. 2nd is a lil tougher to get into sometimes as well. I am going to change the fluid and see if that helps, what would you guys reccomend?
Its a 1998 Integra Ls, 182k
GM synchromesh friction modified?
Royal Purple?
Redline?
Amsoil?

Honda MTF or 10W-30 Conventional Oil. Don't waste your money on anything else.

Honda MTF or Pennzoil synchromesh. If you use standard engine oil, keep in mind, you need to change it every time you change the engine oil.
If the 3rd gear grind is quite frequent and your clutch is good, you'll probably end up needing a 3rd gear sleeve kit. 2nd gear may still be just a synchro spring to fix. If you wait until it's like 3rd gear, you'll be needing a 1-2 sleeve kit, too.

fuck honda mtf and if you fix it now it will be alot cheaper. would be fixed by just replacing the syncro spring. if you keep grinding it then its gonna cost you big money to replace the gear, hub, syncro, and spring.
bring me the trans and i can fix it for $75.

I think 3rd is already past a spring by the sounds of it, Mike...

U guys crack me up, Honda mtf is perfect for what he uses the car for. Syncromesh is a joke, it doesn't help at all. I've had the same luck with both Honda and syncromesh. Welcome to the world of Honda b series trannys, they end up grinding. Lol. Now that torco mtf is really good for the b series. It makes my trannys last longer in between rebuilds. But I don't think u need it for a regular Honda. It's just a bandaid for higher horse cars.
My advice is to park it and pull it, go ahead and buy the sleeve kit. U can even get them without the hub now, saves u $50, since thehub rarely ever gets worn. Check the dogs on the gear itself, if it looks like grindage, or the point is closer to one side of the gear, replace it. U can even stock up on springs now, so u may be lucky and be able to just replace 2nd gear spring.
Let us know what happens

Says sometimes during normal driving. I've rebuilt a TON of B series transmissions, too, as you already know. They do not grind during normal driving until the sleeve starts getting worn out. Synchro spring replacement usually fixes a 3rd gear high RPM grind only if it just started.02Type-S;210315 wrote:Soooo recently I've been getting a 3rd gear grind, all the time at high rpm, every once in a while normal driving.
As stated, best thing to do is to open trans and inspect everything. It's STUPID to continue to drive the car the way it is. I you continue, you will just cost yourself more money. I'd say I have any part you'd need to fix the trans no matter what is wrong. Synchro spring, sleeve parts, etc. Open it up and figure out what's wrong and get it fixed. We can say what's wrong all day long but that won't make the trans work correctly.
No fluid should ever be used to try to fix a grind. It's stupid. You should use the fluid that makes the car shift best and also protects the internals. You do not want to use any fluid that is thicker than stock; if you do, you will have lubrication issues to the needle bearings.
Do what MIke said. Pull your trans. Take it to him. He told you he will fix your problem for $75. You can't beat that. $75 for a sight unseen repair is a deal, you can believe me when I say that.
EDIT: Also, if you DO need a 3-4 sleeve, I'd recommend buying used. Sucks to buy a sleeve set for $175-200 plus shipping when you could probably get a used one that is like new for $50 or so. An LS trans just is not worth going overboard on, IMHO. SynchroTech/Gearspeed is a good source for the synchro springs (I don't think anyone else offers them anyway) but for sleeve kits, etc, I use AcuraOEMParts.com, AcuraCarland, etc. You can get OEM parts cheaper through then than through Dave at SynchroTech.
