Swapping Trannys this weekend. Both are Manual. Other than what Helms/Haynes, manual says are there any tips that will make this easier or stuff I should look out for. So far from my research it should be just take off, and bolt on for the new one, and everything will be okay. Should I replace seals for axles?

Thanks for any info provided....

Yep, just a direct swap out. To be safe, I would replace the TOB and the pilot bearing while you are in there and check the clutch disc to make sure it's still got lots of life left on it. Pretty simple swap; you should have it done in a few hours.

ive seen some people unbolt the entire susspension just to get the axles out. pop the lower bj and slide it over do not take off the top bj, then pop the axle out of the tranny and let it hang from the strut fork. save you alot of time. again might be common sense but just putting it out there.; if you like it, you can take it, if you don't, send it right back. lol

don't overtighten the pressure plate bolts if you take it off... you can break them VERY easily.

put a VERY LIGHT rub of grease on the input shaft of the trans. JUST ENOUGH that you can see a coating not big globs and puddles of it. It will make the shaft slide into the clutch disc easier and give a little lube for the TOB. also, when you are remounting the slave cylinder, put a dab of grease in the 'cup' that it pushes into...again eases clutch release with a little lube.

go ahead a put axle seals in while it's apart (like you asked). they're cheap and much easier to do it while the trans is out and you don't have to pull the axles again to replace them later.

get a funnel with a long tip or hose attached so you can fill the trans from up top through the VSS hole.

check for dowel pins being stuck in the trans case/block. nothing will frustrate you more than fighting lining up a trans/block only to find that there's 2 dowel pins trying to occupy the same space.

take your time and don't f**K anything up. then enjoy your new shorter gearing.

Do not overfil the transmission. Thats a very common mistake when people refill their transmissions from the VSS. It will take 1.9-2.0 QTS. And honestly, working at a quick lube and doing this shit on a daily basis, its easier to remove the transmission fill plug and fill the transmission from there. Like originally intended.

Thanks for all information. I will probably hold off doing it this weekend because I am thinking about replacing the entire block next weekend due to my ring issue. Makes no sense to put it on now, when i will have to redo it again next weekend when I tear the block down and put new rings on....
