final drive swap?

Post by singleslammer »

Hey everyone. I have a 94 cx with the super tall gearing and was wondering if it was easy"ish" to remove the final drive and swap it for a z6 final drive? I would like to do this with the tranny in the car. Is this possible? I find a ratio calculator and figured out that the ratios are the same but my final drive is 3.25 vs 4.25 for everything else. My tranny is in decent shape and I don't really want to keep this rediculously tall gearing since I would like to make this car fun to drive.

impossible to do with the transmission still in the car. also, with swapping out the final drive gear, you will have to swap out the counter shaft due to the different number of teeth needed to make the different gear ratio.

Alright, Does this require me to disassemble the entire trans or just the dif?

the differential is located inside the transmission which requires for the transmission to be disassembled.

not to sound mean or anything, but if you do not know that the differential is located inside the transmission, i would suggest you not attempting to swap the final drives out. pay someone like me to do it for you, and if youre interested in me doing it, pm me.

Thanks, the info I was looking for. I was basing this question off my experience with other cars. I think that I can access my diff on my toyota without taking the entire trans apart. Maybe not. This is the first FWD car I have ever owned and wanted to mod.

lol, if you want a final drive put in you know (or you should) im the best trans guy around (also the cheapest) and you know i have a ton of z6/y8 tranny parts. plenty of gearsets since im done with z6/y8 trannies now and run the integra CG trans :)

oh and by the way.. the gear ratios ARE NOT the same between cx/vx and ex/si transmissions. its all different, not just the final drive..

but getting rid of that cx trans in favor of a z6/y8 will make the biggest difference then anything you could possibly do to your car.

Oh I know that they aren't the same, but they are fairly close. Basically I am trying to figure the cheapest way to ditch this trans. Since the final drive isn't easily accessible, it would be easier and cheaper to just get a z6/y8 tranny.

well the easiest and cheapest would be to have me put a full z6 gearset in your current trans. and pulling the trans takes about 30-45 minutes.

So keeping my current case and "slapping" Z6 gears in there is cheaper than just swapping in a completely different trans? Damn hondas are strange
