noise around 3-4k

Post by blinkbcr »

Hey ever since last night, I have been having this weird whining/kinda grinding noise. At first I thought it was whenever I was shifting but now it seems to start around 3k rpm's and last until about 4k. It doesn't happen all the time and not on all the gears. I don't even touch the clutch and it happens. It mostly happens from 1-2,2-3, 3-4 but not every time. But whenever it does seem to happen, it is around 3-4k rpm's. It seems to be on the left side of the car cuz I can hear it better than a passenger. I have a '00 gsr and about 3 weeks ago I changed my mtf and didn't have any problems. I used honda mtf and I don't think it is with the transmission but that is why I'm asking you guys :) any help would be greatly appreciated and if you need more info, I can try to describe it better. Thanks

So far I've heard that it might be my throw out bearing and input shaft bearing. I checked my trans. fluid today, and it is full and not leaking.

Since it's RPM related, if it is in the trans, it would probably have to do with the input shaft (TOB, input shaft bearing as others have said) IT could also be engine related. Possiblities there are timing belt slapping cover, water pump on its way out (bearings in it), tensioner, alternator bearings failing, or any belt driven accessory. Will it do it if you are stopped or only while moving? If you push the clutch in does it get quieter, louder, or stay the same?

It does it even if I am just sitting there. I don't have to be in gear, I just had it in neutral and whenever I hit 3300 it started whining. If I push in the clutch, it goes away until I hit around 3k again. Which is why I could see it being the TOB. But would it be so inconsistant? Sometimes I can be out and I won't get it to make a noise and other times it will do it everytime I hit around 3k. It just started this two days ago so I guess I'm still trying to narrow it down.

When you say whine, did you recently have your timing belt changed?? They will make a whine sound if they are too tight. Being too tight will also ruin the heads bearing surfaces in a big hurry. If the sound is exactly the same with the clutch in and out, I'd kind of doubt the TOB but anything is possible. typically, a TOB will be noisy as hell with the clutch out but quite a bit quieter when you push the clutch in. They also usually make noise all the time when they are out.

No I haven't changed my timing belt. Ya I think we're ruling out the TOB for the fact that I can have it in neutral and just give it gas with the clutch out, and it will make the whine/grind noise. Which means it is something with the engine? I dont know, thats why I'm asking you guys Also if i just sit at like 3400 rpm's it will just continuously make the noise. From like 3100-3700 it is making it.

Have someone hold the gas down with your car in neutral. Take a screwdriver and push it against the trans case and put your ear to it. Then, put it to the engine. See where it's louder. Or, you may be able to just stand there and figure out where the noise is coming from. If I was closer, I'd help trouble shoot it. I'm sure there are others on here willing to help you out.

Hey thanks for all the help. Ya I have some friends and family that are going to take a look at it and hopefully figure out what is going on. I dont think it has anything to do with the transmission anymore but what is it in the engine then...idk??

Alright so it makes the noise even with the clutch in. I haven't been driving my car but no matter if the car is in gear or in neutral, it will make the noise around 3-4k. So that makes me think it has nothing to do with the transmission. But today is the first day I've drove it in about a week, and it would bog down on me. I would be driving and it would start bogging down, and then i would give it more gas and then bog some more and then take off. Any idea on this? A belt is what we were thinking but I haven't talked to anyone yet on the bogging down issue soo idk what it is

Hard to say without being there. Have you checked your voltage yet? Maybe the alternator is going south and it's not charging right away then starts going. Low voltage does some crazy stuff. Otherwise, get under the hood and isolate where the noise is coming from; that will help the people that aren't standing right there.

you pretty much said everything possible. but don't forget about that little thing called the pilot bearing. just another thing to look into.
