so you swapped out an unknown part with another 3 unknown parts and still had the problem.

only thing to conclued is either you have really bad luck and have a total of four bad main relays or it isnt the main relay causing the problem.

is what being hot? it hot outside or the engine running hot?

is your car throwing any cels? when the car doesnt start, can you hear or feel the main relay clicking? does your fuel pump prime itself and then stop?

in addition to the above questions, when the car doesnt start, are you getting fuel and spark or one and not the other?

the main relay being hot. no cels stay on. it comes on when the car dies, but then goes away when i try to restart it. when it dies i turn it off and pull the key. then try to restart. sometimes it restarts right away, sometimes it takes a few minutes. yesterday it wouldnt restart for 45 minutes. it turns over like it wants to start, but it doesnt. new plugs. wires are maybe 9 months old. never checked to see if i can feel the main relay clicking. i will when i mess with it next time.

been doing some reading. it seems to me that the two possible culprits are the main relay or dizzy.

Well if your check engine light stays on, it could be the relay. I'm leaning more towards distributor though.

I doubt you have that many bad relays, and just an fyi, every time the motor dies when in the run position you will have a CEL come on. I would bet that it is the coil inside the distributor, they commonly go bad and they are prone to cracking and having issues of dying and hard hot starts when they begin degrading.

But like everyone said, as soon as it dies, turn the key off and then back to just the on position, don't try to start it just listen for the whine of the fuel pump...if you hear the pump it's a good sign it's not the relay. Good luck.
