hard start/high idle problem

Post by getteg »

Im looking to you guys for a little help. I have done some research and I feel I know what the issue is but I want to know some opinions from here.

My 98 GSR has been having trouble starting from time to time. It cranks over no problem but just wont start. If I push the gas to the floor it starts after a few seconds of cranking. You can hear it getting closer and closer to starting until it does. This does not happen every time I start the car.

Also when it does start it likes to run up to 2000-2500 RPM's at idle which eventually calms down back to around 800 or so. It does not do this every time I start the car either.

This was not a sudden issue, it has been happening more often and started a few weeks ago. I have not done anything to the car in over a month. She has just under 200K miles.

My thoughts are IACV, but I wanted to see if anyone with more experience with this issue would like to chime in to confirm or deny my thoughts.

Thanks a ton for any info!

Brian

Stock manifold, no CEL, and I can hear the fuel pump kick on so I assume it isnt the relay. Im going to clean the IACV tonight and see what that does.

distributor. more specific >coil and or contacts with wires. next time it does it, pull a plug wire and check color of spark with another plug. lay the plug there on the valve cover.

Cleaned the IACV and still have issues.

Dale Im not 100% sure what you mean but Im gunna mess with it monday.

Also thanks crimson for the idea, I will check that as well.

I have yet to see anything that makes it happen on the regular. I was out driving tonight and whenever I would push in the clutch it would go up to 2500 and sit there. Then when I got home and backed into the driveway and parked it still running it seamed to be fine.
