rectify Oil Burning

Post by Teg-Potential »

So i changed my oil today, and granted Ive been running it kinda hard lately but I had to add oil to it the other day and when i changed the oil today only 3 qts came out(6 in total and 3 came out in 3500 miles) So I thought today I'd start pricing and getting the facts about what pieces cause the engine to burn oil. Ideally i'd love to go back to brand new (clean clear oil in and clear oil back out) but i know thats not possible with 170k on her.

With my limited knowledge and research the biggest culprit behind oil burning is valve seals...

Now correct me if im wrong, but if i decide to go in to fix the seals and rings (and plan to in the future build the engine) be best from a labor stand point to upgrade things while in there. right?

So lets start with a list of things i should look into replacing/refreshing to keep oil burning to a minimum and then we can go into which would be best upgrades for boosted application.

Replace:

-Valve seals
-piston rings
- and ... ?

thanks

it would be best to do it all at once if you plan to build a setup and boost it. have you noticed it smoking any under acceleration, deceleration, etc?
i may not be "logical" but at least i can change my oil...

rectify Oil Burning

When I had someone drive behind me it certainly revealed that I was burning more oil than I thought, if you aren't smoking at startup, then it likely isn't valve seals. If it smokes during hard acceleration it's your top piston rings, if you smoke after deceleration it is your oil control rings. Replacing valve seals is cheap and relatively easy compared to new piston rings, but it likely won't fix anything if you aren't smoking at startup

Ok so if its piston rings then that would also affect compression wouldn't it? and oil control rings affect compression? same with valve seals?

if thats the case then ill be replacing them all for boost anyway, just cost me a few extra benjamins to rickles to do so.

Thank you for the feedback
