Anyone else noticed an alarming trend?

Post by luvmyhondas »

I've noticed that (for some time now) a d16y8 engine won't last much past 150K, if it makes it that far. 'course now they are getting hard to find, and even if you do find one who wants to put one in just to have it knock in a year.

what's everyone doing (short of B swap) to get these cars back on the road. looking for cost effective, stock/repair scenario, not performance upgrade.

I mean are folks just mini-me-ing with y7 bottoms? z6 motors? rebuilds, remans, ????

I've got 2 customers that are in need of d16y8 motors and 1 of them I JUST replaced last year about this time 15k miles ago.

would like to hear from the guys on here that have done a lot of work on Honda... (Dale, Ryan, Andy, Mike!? where ya at on this?).

Oil starvation. Smaller ports on crank journals.

Yep, They are throw away motors for the most part, if your going to rebuild start with a z6 or a6 short block. Still plenty of those around.

I have a Y8 in my DD w/ 220K that runs like a champ though, I think frequent oil change intervals are the key to keeping them alive.

ive swapped 3/4 y7 bottom ends in with y8 heads due to the easier availability of the y7's... ive had really good luck with this so far with reliability 35k+ one them all since swap

thanks for the info... wanted to make sure it wasn't just SEMO blowing up y8 motors.

anyone else seen d17a1 (01-05 non vtec 1.7) with complete loss of compression in all 4 cylinders, but no broken timing, no blown hg, etc. just a sudden loss of ALL compression? I have also just had the second one within the last year come to my place.

i also drive less than 300 miles a month, and like a granny at that.
