Obd2a to Obd1 throwing codes and bouncing Idle

Post by Uncle_Willie »

Ok i bought a 92 Civic DX sedan with an Ls-vtec swap(OBD1 swap) a few months back. The car ran perfect, Idled at a consistant 800rpms, and didnt throw any codes. A couple weeks ago I picked up a 98 Civic Ex Coupe shell(OBD2A car) to put the Ls-v swap in.....Well long story short, we swapped the motor into the EK and im having some idling issues and im throwing a couple codes. The first code is Code 1 for an O2 sensor. The car has a chipped P72 that was tuned on Chrome at Revline in KC and when the tune was done they deleted O2 sensors so this code kind of confuses me. When the swap was in the 4 door i was getting 29mpgs and now its getting 23.2mpgs. The second code is Code 14 for the IACV. I knew it would throw that code and I thought i knew how to fix it.

I was told to use this to repin a plug on the dash harness:

Well when i was ready to repin that plug I looked at the Plug on my dash harness and saw this:

The black/blue wire is already moved and there is no orange wire. The car has never been swapped before to my knowledge and still had a D16y8 in it.

The car has a very inconsistant idle. Sometimes it will idle solid at 1k rpms, sometimes at about 1800rpms, but most of the time it will constantly bounce between 1k and 2200rpms.

We used the factory EX harness out of the EK and I bought an Obd2a to Obd1 Jumper harness from Ryan A to use. I think I have all the necessary info to get to the bottom of this posted but if anyone needs anymore info just let me know. Im hoping this is an easy fix.

Since you put the swap into a 96-98 Civic EX, there is no need to do the IACV re-pin since it's already a two-wire IACV from the factory. That's why your plug doesn't look right. Are you sure you have the right two-pin plug plugged into the IACV?

Well im pretty sure you guys were right, put the other plug on it and it started up right away and idled at about 1200rpms. Im gonna take it out for a spin here in a few minutes and see if that fixed everything

Ok so I put the other plug on the iacv and then came across another issue. It idled fine for a minute while it was just sitting there idling(started at 1200 when i started it cold and it eventually idled down to 1k rpms). Then i drove it around town. When i come to a stop and the car idles, its having a surging idle between 1200-1500rpms. Then when you take off its extremely jumpy if your running in gear under about 2k rpms....any ideas??

I had this prob on my Obd1 car it drove me nuts. It ended up being a fast idle valve I dont know if this would appy to this application but worth looking into.

Im gonna clean the iacv first to see if that solves anything, if not ill check the fitv next.

If I remember correctly, I think the EX autos still had the 3 wire IACV.
Did you auto to manual swap your shell?
